  1. Islamic AnIntroduction to Medicine Complementary what it is Medical Therapeutics& what it is not Insaniah College University Lecture: CME Omar Zaid, M.D. Mar 2013

  2. Islamic Medicine is defined as an approach to Medical Care whose basic paradigms, concepts, values and procedures conform to or do not contradict the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is characterized by being value-based, by being holistic under the tauhidicparadigm, and by conforming to the five purposes of the Law, maqasid al shari’at. It is not: specific medical procedures or pharmacopeia of therapeutic agents used in a particular place or a particular time. Islamic Medicine is universal, all-embracing, flexible, and allows for growth and development of various methods of investigating and treating diseases within the frame-work described above. • Prof Omar HasanKasule, Sr

  3. The Islamic approach to medicine has reintroduced the human element in medicine without denying the benefits of modern medical technology. It is a process of conceptual transformation called the Islamization of Medicine. The end-result of the Islamization process will not bea medical system for muslims only but for the whole of humanity because Islam is a set of universal and objective values. Islamization is not: theologizing or the localizing of parochial medicine It is rather a process that makes an objective, universal, value-based and systematic scheme of excellence for all. Prof Omar HasanKasule, Sr. MB ChB (MUK), MPH (Harvard), DrPH (Harvard) Professor of Epidemiology and Islamic Medicine,Universiti Brunei

  4. Why Do We Need Islamic Medicine? Motivating Factors An unacceptably high number of patients are being treated for side effects of modern therapeutic agents = (man is not a test tube) Narrow specialization leads to lack of a holistic approach to the patient (Reductionism) Physicians behave as a technician and turn a blind eye to moral and social issues that affect the health of their patients Secularized medicine has no consistent set of ethics or morals which then leads to malpractice, fraud, and bias in research • Prof Omar HasanKasule, Sr.

  5. Why Do We Need Islamic Medicine? By denying religious and moral dimensions, European medicine operates in a presumed moral vacuum. All of which is the result of • Materialist Reductionism  lack of tauhid or wholism. • Greed due to consumerism. • Fear of Death is manipulated. • Application of laws governing the mineral and animal kingdomsto man. 'Evidence-Based' Medicine: A Coin's Flip Worth of Certainty … http://www.activistpost.com/2012/11/evidence-based-medicine-coins-flip.html  90% of peer-reviewed clinical research, the holy grail of the conventional medical system, is exaggerated, or worse, completely false  FRAUD the result of scientific ignorance

  6. The Muslim Doctor’s Responsibility is to PROTECT & ACTIVATE the Purpose of Shari’ah in the realm of medical practice with regard to : Physical Health Spiritual Health Progeny Mental Health Wealth five purposes of the Law, maqasid al shari’at The Physician’s role is integral to these purposes which are Preventative as well as Curative Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that: Allah did not reveal any disease without also revealing its cure. Hence, As Muslim Physicians, our duty is to: seek, find and apply these REVEALED CURES. non-scientific by Islamic Standards Hence also, the Muslim Physician has a responsibility not to blindly follow the West (taqlid) because Western Allopathic Medicine is not curative which then amounts to a Denial of Islam The West is destroying their people’s health, progeny, spirits and wealth by treating symptoms in a non-wholistic, non-tauhidic / non-Islamic manner accepted neo-Medical Norm  this is the result of Secular Humanism which has led to Scientific Reductionism.

  7. Un-balanced The principle of tauhid requires acomprehensive ‘birds-eye’ view of the patient’s disease, physical constitution / environment (physical & social) / mental capacity / knowledge base / and belief system. The Western allopathic system pays lip service to these realms by merely recording on paper some pertinent data without taking initiative or action to modify medical treatments or environment via integration = non-tauhidic. Western medicine,in the pursuit of profit, has been reduced to recipe makers and vendors whereby technicians (the doctor) prescribe and treat without affording time, resources or concern for more comprehensive Islamic approaches. The latter is precluded by life ways and mental constructs (worldviews) that are fundamentally non-Islamic and materialistically weighted (unbalanced).

  8. Food = Curative Below are profit making, chemo-synthetic treatments for the palliation of symptoms and are useful... BUT They cannot and do not cure. Pill-Popping is a delusion of the Modern Age that aids hegemony of the NWO and the human denial syndrome when uninhibited by Revelation & Taffakur. It represents a medical paradigm (McMedicine?)that allows doctor and patient to continue the pretense of success both physically and spiritually == Monetized Worldview  The above substances are Curative, Divinely Created and are Imbued with the living and dynamic formative word of Al’Mussawir Toxic Chemicals Palliative

  9. John Kenneth Galbraith, in his book, The Anatomy of Power (Boston, 1983),gavethree historical and effective means of wielding power, regardless of metaphysical orientation (ideas = worldview), so that injustice is certain to triumph: 1. Condign: meaning the ability of the elite to impose sufficiently unpleasant or painful alternatives; (e.g. No Credentialing, No Publication, No license, No Insurance) 2. Compensatory: win submission by offering affirmative rewards (bribes via something of value to those submitted) i.e. cronyism or apartheid systems of reward = safety net (e.g. large numbers of government employees); 3. Conditioned: exercised by changing beliefs via persuasion, education, and social commitment to what appears to be natural, proper, or right.  PROPAGANDA = PR = ADVERTISING (semiotics) (education – elimination of Islamic Knowledge or the limitation of such knowledge to religion and ritual, which then excludes tauhid science & political participation -> real decision making and execution. illusions

  10. Condign Example: meaning the ability of the elite to impose sufficiently unpleasant or painful alternatives; No Credentialing / No Publication / No license / No Insurance Example: Suppression of Antineoplastonstx for Brain Tumors developed by Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski in the 1970s. Method: Years of Legal Persecution by FDA, NCI and State Medical Boards (without success = No Conviction) Why did they Prosecute? Did they create Harm? Ethical? Moral? the pursuit of profit he holds the patents which includes protocols. FRAUD they couldn’t reproduce his results because they deliberately altered his protocols, then published that his work was invalid. They did this at the Mayo Clinic BECAUSE THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY THAT BACKED THE STUDIES DID NOT WANT TO SHARE THE PROFITS WITH HIM …. (ROCHE’) Hence, they tried to discredit him professionally and publicly because they could not do it legally.

  11. Remember Allah did not reveal any disease without also revealing its cure. Hence, As Muslim Physicians, our duty is to: seek, find and apply these REVEALED CURES. Rather than blindly follow the West Intervention by the authorities in this case (and others) prevented (prevents) the promotion and protection of all five of these responsibilities

  12. What did Dr. Burzynski do that was Islamic? He studied Patients without cancer to see why they did not develop the disease  Tauhidic Science Result: serendipity: they had anti-neoplastons in their circulation. (peptides and amino acids – also excreted in urine) He isolated then synthesized these compounds then developed protocols for treatment (>30)  hard work  Islamic (the call to “Act”) His stats are excellent and his patients are extremely loyal; enough to camp out on the steps of the Capital Building and testify before Congress  (empirical evidence with moral force) E.G. Pediatric Brainstem Glioma 0.9 % 5yr survival rate with conventional chemotherapy With Anti-Neoplaston Therapy  25% complete remission after 5 yrs A form of inspiration ? Absent in cancer patients

  13. Islamically, what was/is his error? • He has not investigated why it is that patients without cancer produce anti-neoplastons: • i.e., the specific amino acids & peptide groups that naturally help prevent cancerous tissue • Mechanisms?: (a) inhibit oncogenes • (b) promote apoptosis of cancer cells; • (c) Activate tumor suppressor cells; • (d) inhibit methylation of isozymes that • promote cancer cell growth and metastasis. Why do cancer patients not produce these compounds naturally? Or: Why do Cancer Free patients produce them?

  14. Cures Cancer research is doing very little in these areas – why? PROFIT MOTIVE - ??? We are instructed by the prophet himself in Preventative & Curative Medicine Palliative medicine is a third and last priority in the Islamic Scheme of Medicine. Nevertheless palliation has become the primary focus of research, education and practice, all of which ignore the search and discovery of revealed curative measures and agents. Paliatives

  15. Most of tibbnabawi[Prophetic Medicine] is preventive medicine and must have been divinely inspiredas are curative therapies. If so - where are they included in Muslim Medical Education and Public Health Administration? • Diet, fasting, nutrition and exercise; • Quarantine for epidemics; (HIV ?) • Forbidding urination in stagnant water - Hygiene; • Precautions to prevent fire and pests; • Leaving a country because of its water and climate. • Spiritual Aspects of Healing and Recovery: • Prayer, dua, recitation of the Qur’an and the Remembrance of Allah play a central role • and tawbah CHANGE …following the West is not change Because of political correctness HIV has become a ‘protected’ disease 2011 - 550 sex workers vs. 2,865 wives, 205 students, 593 babies* 2/3rds of cases are Malay (IV Drug Abusers) Known Recommendations from the prophet himself * Malaysian AIDS Counsel

  16. Islamic Medicine is defined as an approach to Medical Care whose basic paradigms, concepts, values and procedures conform to or do not contradict the Qur’an and Sunnah. Islamic Medicine is universal, all-embracing, flexible, and allows for growth and development of various methods of investigating and treating diseases within the frame-work described above. • Remember: • It is a process of • Conceptual and complementary transformation(CHANGE) • the • Islamization • of • Medicine. • Prof. Dr. Omar HasanKasule

  17. Complementary Health Care Approaches • To consider for future CME & review: • Nutrition: Indigenous Foods and Herbal Remedies (adat) • Unprocessed foods (pollution) // Agronomy • Perma-culture // Biodynamics // Water (crisis looms) • Environmental: Public Health Hygiene and prevention of a toxic environment (pollution) // built environment’s • sustainability // aesthetics of architecture • Therapeutics: Activitiesexercise / martial arts / prayer • counseling / principles of classical Islamic therapeutics • Alternative Modalities • Osteopathy / Chiropractic / Homeopathy / Acupuncture / Massage (Physical Therapy)
