  23. Yerba Buena Island • Varied topography -- 60 meter elevation change • Steep slopes • Narrow winding roads • USCG base for 24 hour Search and Rescue unit • Lots of underground utilities

  24. Environmental Constraints at YBI Historic Structures W2 foundation contract W2 foundation contract USCG Facilities

  25. Special Aquatic Site - Yerba Buena Island Yerba Buena Island

  26. Retrofit/Substation Scope • Construct New YBI Substation • West Bound On Ramp Roadway Work • Demolish Existing Substation and Maintenance Garage • Viaduct Retrofit Work

  27. Yerba Buena Island • New Substation

  28. Environmental Constraints at YBI Historic Structures Substation contract USCG Facilities

  29. Substation CONTROL / COMPUTER GARAGE ELECTRICAL ROOM OFFICE PARKING LOT MECHANICAL ROOM

  30. Substation • One story 468 square meter structure including • Mechanical Room • major equipment – 2 air compressors • Electrical Room • major equipment – 14.47 kV metal clad switchgear, 1000 kV power transformer • Control/Computer Room • Office • Bathroom • Break Room • Garage • Battery Room

  33. Structure Items Glenn Fleming Mechanical Engineer Structural Design, Toll Bridge Program

  34. Introduction to YBI Viaduct Structure Retrofit • 3 Frames of Bridge Construction • Frames 1 & 2 - West Segment Retrofit • Frame 3 - WB On Ramp Approach Retrofit

  35. YBI Viaduct - General PlanFrame 1 & 2 - Construct West Segment RetrofitFrame 3 - Construct WB On Ramp Approach Retrofit 33m 33m 33m Exp JT 31 34 35 38 39 42 43 Bent WB on-ramp Frame 1 Frame 2 Frame 3 Tunnel SF WB off-ramp

  36. Frame 1 - Typical Section • Construct Concrete • Seat Extensions, • drill and bond dowels Wall, typ Typical Section Near Bent 33 Design Note: Floor beams are simply supported by continuous retaining walls with partial height counterfort walls. Analysis has determined floor beams are vulnerability to unseating.

  37. Frame 2 - Typical Section • Construct Concrete Collars at counterforts and short columns • Construct Seat Extensions Top of Wall Typical Section Near Bent 37 Design Note: Counterforts support short columns along the north edge of deck. Analysis has determined inadequate shear capacity of the short columns. Additionally, floor beams are vulnerability to unseating.

  38. Strengthen Counterfort and Short Column - Frame 2 • Construct counterfort & short column concrete collars • Drill & pressure grout

  39. Frame 3 - Typical Section 3 5 6 1 7 2 4 Typical Section Bent 39 • 1. Strengthen (encase) north-side viaduct bent caps. • 2. Strengthen (encase) columns located beneath ramp. • 3. Strengthen (encase) longitudinal girder beneath ramp. • 4. Strengthen (encase) and tie-down, ramp column footings. • 5. Construct seat extension and bolster at ramp abutment diaphram. • 6. Extend bent caps to ramp columns. • 7. Construct shear wall and retaining walls. • Demo and widen deck from bent 41 to just beyond • bent 42 (not shown). Design Note: Analysis has identified that the caps and girders are not capable of resisting the column plastic moment.

  40. Substation Relocation WB On-ramp to SF • Remove existing Caltrans electrical substation and garage, and reconstruct substation Bent 47 • Note proximity to WB ramp
