  1. Presented By Snehaa Ganesh Kumar: Format of the Spelling Bee + Tips

  2. School Bee! We Will Go Over: Format Rules Preparation

  3. Step 1: Classroom Bee or Written Test Elementary School: Classroom Bee! • Always from list!! • Some schools want you to say capital letters and dashes • Anywhere from top 1-3 advance to school finals Middle School: Written Test! • Always from the list!! • Teacher/administrator pronounces word to the entire class (usually doesn’t give any extra information) • Top scores move on to school finals

  4. Step 2: School Bee! How does it work? • All the participants will sit in a row, with the pronouncer and judges either on the front or side of them • You’ll walk to the mike, and be given a word • If you misspell, you get eliminated • This process will continue until only the champion is left! Where will the words be from? • Initially, the words will be from the school list that is provided to you. • However, if they can’t end the bee on the school list, they will go to the additional words section

  5. Rules of the School Bee!! These things will get you eliminated!! • Saying the wrong letter: you can’t start over • Starting over in the middle of a word • Not spelling before time is up Highly Recommend Doing These: • Say the word before and after you spell • Ask for all the info Contesting! • If you think you were eliminated unfairly, contest RIGHT AWAY! You should contest right after you get dinged, or at least before the start of the next round • If you wait more than one round, you’re automatically eliminated! It’s impossible to go back and do the past two rounds, as it won’t be fair to the rest of the contestants

  6. Asking for the Info! What can you ask for? • Alternate Pronunciations • Definition • Can it be used in a sentence? • The word to be repeated • Am I saying it correctly? • Language of Origin • Part of Speech If you don’t know the word, ask for ALL the info!!

  7. Tips/Preparation!! Words: • Be COMPLETELY thorough in the school list • You can find the school list online (maybe even before they release it at school) → just google 2019 (or whatever year it is then) classroom pronouncer guide • Study the Consolidated Word List! This is one of the main study sources for beginners Studying the List: • Remember, you don’t need to worry about capital letters, dashes, or accents • Speed through the early portion of the list (contains words like fun, cat, etc) • Once you get to the harder level words, get someone to quiz you • Constantly look at the words! In the car, before you go to bed: don’t let yourself forget the words Spelling the Word: • Spell slowly and clearly • Spell the word prior to spelling it in the mike, either in your head, or on your hand • Say the word before and after spelling

  8. Regional Bee!! We Will Cover: • Format • Preparation

  9. Format!! Changes!! • Until last year, there used to be a written test in Sacramento, and the top 50-60 would advance to oral finals on the first Wednesday of March • Now, the written test is administered online at your school (proctored) • It’s also smaller: only the top 40-50 spellers will go to orals now Oral Finals: • Same format as school bee • You can ask for roots • First round is from Spell-It • Remaining rounds are from the dictionary • Tip: Scripps rotates the same list for 2-3 weeks, so if you have words from a regional that happened recently, there’s a good chance that those words will be used

  10. Preparation/Tips!! Spell It! • Be ABSOLUTELY thorough with Spell-It! • Go to Merriam-Webster Unabridged, and make sure you know the correct pronunciation! • Words such as dachshund and macrame can easily be mispronounced Outside Prep: • Try and be done with CWL! • New Nat’s Notes and Verbomania (Hexco Products) Tips! • Don’t be nervous!! It’s easy to blank out, especially on a big stage like the regional bee… • Repeat the word, before and after • Ask for ALL the info! • Let the pronouncer know if you can’t hear them right!

  11. Eligibility & Selection Process What is RSVBEE? • A way to go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee without winning regionals • $20 application fee, if you get in, it costs $1500 Eligibility: • To be eligible, you need to have won your school bee! Selection Process: • Applicants will be given invitations in the following order: • 1st preference: Those who have competed in Thursday finals (morning and night) • 2nd preference: Those who have competed in the NSB • 3rd preference: 8th graders • 4th preference: 7th graders • 5th preference: 6th graders • 6th preference: remaining, ranking downwards
