But we don’t really put much thought into understanding where these diamonds come from and what sort of work goes into making these diamonds look like what they are or where they come from. Unfortunately, many a times these sparkling wonders that become a part of the fine jewellery craft are a result of some inhumane and exploiting practices that nobody really talks about. The stone from which we get the diamond is needed to be mined from deep under the earth. Sometimes, these caves or holes are so narrow that you will have to send someone of smaller size to get it. And this is how, the children get exploited and get paid sometimes less than a dollar for a day. Even if the diamonds that you get are certified, more often than not these diamonds are never totally procured ethically. Hence, lots of people are turning to lab made diamonds today. Lab made diamonds are not to be confused with the plastic diamonds which is used in fake jewellery. These diamonds are the same as the diamonds that are mined from the earth, with the only big difference being that the diamond is made in a laboratory. These diamonds are literally made from a real diamond’s seed, put under extreme temperature and pressure and eventually, they let it sit and grow to become a stone as close as the real diamonds. The lab grown diamond manufacturers even vouch for the fact that even a certified jeweller will not be able to tell the difference between a real diamond and a lab made one. This is majorly because both these diamonds are made from carbon and are more or less formed by the same process too. The only way one can tell both of them apart is that the lab diamonds are more sparkly and whiter than the naturally found diamonds. This is because the natural diamond usually has a lot of impurities and certain gases such as nitrogen and elements like boron become a part of it. Otherwise, it is interesting to note that both these diamonds have the exact same properties, both physically and chemically and hence it is difficult to really tell them apart unless placed under a special light. Other reasons why there is a steady shift towards the lab made diamonds is because mining for natural diamonds takes up a lot of soil removal, around ninety eight square feet per carat, the mining causes a lot of soil removal, air pollution, and per carat needs a lot of gallons of water (around 127) to mine. And last but not the least, the risk involved in the work environment to get the raw material out is high, which is not the case when we talk about lab made diamonds. Therefore, CVD diamonds are indeed the next big thing in the jewellery industry.
