  2. Service Learning Now that you have completed your research and written your reports, you need to think about how to communicate and share what you've learned with the community and school. Service Learning Planning • Your class is going to develop a community service project that will allow you to learn while serving the community. • That's right! • The plans you develop during the • next few EIC classes will determine • what you will be doing this semester. • Today, you will vote for 5 class leaders based on the quality of their Social Investigation project. These five students will become the group leaders for the next planning step of the Service Learning Project.

Service Learning Planning • After students are divided into 5 groups, each group will begin brainstorming and create an outline for a possible service learning event using the Service Learning Planning Tool PDF (see website). • These group plans will be presented on • Tuesday, February the 4th in PPT form. • Students will vote on which plan they would like to implement for the rest of the semester. * Please note that your teacher has final approval over the project

  7. Service Learning Notebook Entries • Each week you will write 1 notebook entry, • completing 1 per week for the first 5 weeks. • These entries will form a rough draft for the final paper. Each entry due is worth 2 points out of the total 10. • The due dates are as follows: • #1 Due: January 23rd • #2 Due: February 6th • #3 Due: February 20th • #4 Due: March 13th • #5 Due: March 20th

What is service learning? • Define service learning • Explain why service learning is different from community service and/or volunteer work • Explain how your class project fits the definition of service learning • 2. Who is your community partner? • Identify and describe your community partner • What are your partner’s needs? (Specifically, why do you think they needed your help, assistance, or guidance?) • How did you determine your partner’s needs? Is your knowledge based on information, experience, or your opinions? • How will your project assess your partner’s needs? • 3. What are your goals for your service learning project? • What are the class’s goals for the project? • How will the project benefit your community partner? • How will the project benefit you? • What is your specific role in the project? • Describe your individual goals • 4.How can we identify change and growth in our community partner? • How is growth measured in school? • What growth or improvements are you hoping to achieve with your project? • How can you establish a baseline to measure growth (pre-assessment)? • How will you measure any growth created by your service learning event? • 5. Post-Event Reflection • Describe the event in detail • Did the event meet your expectations? Explain • What data did you collect from the event to measure growth? • If you were going to do the entire project over again, what would you change? How could you improve? • What is your advice for next year’s seniors as they develop and implement a service learning plan? see website for handout
