  2. I. Renaissance Italy • In Italy, the value and interests of the laity were no longer subordinated to the interests of the clergy • People began to appreciate and even glorify the: a) secular world b) secular learning c) purely human pursuits All as and ends to themselves.

  3. II. Medieval Art • Placed basically no emphasis on realism & detail • Not focused on the natural world & human emotions • Medieval artists painted flat, 2-dimensional, out of proportion 4. Subjects were primarily religious icons, wars 5. The art often served a greater purpose: - glorifying God or the Church, but - did not glorify the artist 6. Colors used were often drab

Patrons of Renaissance Art • The artists were not independent contractors who produced work for themselves or the public. • They received commissions from: a) Church b) guilds c) wealthy families • Patrons appreciated the beauty of art, but also recognized that art could be visible symbols of power and their wealth. • Patrons used art as a way of displaying their and promoting their fame.

  5. IV. Renaissance Art • Renaissance artists + new technical skills • Chiaroscuro – use of shading to enhance naturalness - creates the illusion of volume - people in paintings seemed to occupy real space • Linear Perspective - created a vanishing point - three dimensional - depth!!!

  6. Pyramid configuration - medieval art featured flat, rigid figures arranged in a horizontal line - artists used 3-dimensional pyramid configurations to create balance

Classical forms and Christian subjects a) inspired by their study of Greek & Roman statues b) they did NOT abandon Christian themes and subjects • Wood and frescos no longer the only medium • Canvas became the choice of paint medium • Paint use of bright colors • Beautiful human bodies • Nudes used in both secular & religious paintings
