  1. Veda Slovena

  2. Veda Slovena • A forged collection of folk songs and legends recorded mainly in Bulgarian Muslim’ communities in the Western Rhodopes Mountains. • Recorded Ivan Gologanov – 12 years • Published into two volumes by the Bosnean Stefan Verkovkovich ( in 1874 & 1881)

  3. Veda Slovena • Initially welcomed as the “discovery of the century” • First critiques and rejection of the authenticity of the songs emerged almost simultaneously with their publication • Polarization in opinions concerning the authenticity of Veda Slovena

  4. Veda Slovena • Rejecters (academician’s authority) – Konstantin Irechek and Ivan Shishmanov • Defenders (not academically educated) – Tzani Ginchev, Hristo Pokonstantinov, Kuzman Shapkarev, Dimitar Marinov. • Veda Slovena is destined to oblivion till the 80-ies of the XX century

  5. Veda Slovena • A new fierce dispute over its authenticity on the pages of the weekly “Literary Front” and “ABC” – pros and cons opinions • Despite the obvious agenda of the official cultural policy inspired and controlled by the daughter of Todor Zhivkov aiming at searching for the so-called most important autochthon roots of the Bulgarian nation neither academic, nor public consensus was reached

  6. Veda Slovena – Evidence for its falcification • Evidence for falsification – no one but those who have made the records heard the songs for real. • Ivan Gologanov was not a random person – well educated, with great knowledge about ancient Hellenic methodology. • European Romanticism (at the end of XVIII till the mid of XIX century) – idealization of the past, the idea of antiquity

  7. Veda Slovena • Still, Veda Slovena consists of 23 809 verses. In comparison with “The Song of the Niberlungs” (9 776 verses). • If Veda Slovena is really an object of mystification, it would mean that Ivan Gologanov is a poetic genius. If not, it would create the necessity to reconsider the history of Europe.
