  3. Where Do I Belong? and difference sum product quotient per of combined take away added

  4. Where Do I Belong? less than decreased multiplied each times more or more than separate

  5. Where Do I Belong? equally all or in all equal parts minus divided or divided by total How many more?

  6. Where Do I Belong? plus subtracted from increased (by) altogether or together How many fewer than? words ending in “er” (faster, longer)

  7. Subtraction Phrases Addition Phrases sum altogether total together added combined plus *more in all * more than all increased by and difference more than less than how many more/fewer minus decreased subtracted from take away words ending in “er” (faster, longer, etc.) * Could also be used in subtraction Multiplication Phrases Division Phrases times multiplied product product of Of(especially when dealing with fractions) equally quotient equal parts *per *each separate divided divided by * Could also be used in multiplication Words that Mean “Equal” is, are, was ,equals

  8. Addition Phrases sumaltogether totaltogether addedcombined plus*more in all *more than increasedbyand * Could also be used in subtraction

  9. Subtraction Phrases differencemore than less thansubtracted from minusdecreased take away how many more/fewer than? words ending in “er” (faster, longer, etc.)

  10. Multiplication Phrases times multiplied product product of Of(especially when dealing with fractions)

  11. Division Phrases equallyquotient equal parts *per *each separate divided divided by * Could also be used in multiplication

  12. Words that Mean “Equal” is are was equals

  13. Numerical Expressions The sum of 2 and 3 The difference of 8 and 5 the product of 4 and 5 The quotient of 9 and 3 3 less than 8 4 more than 9 12 less than 10 2 + 3 8 - 5 4 x 5 9 ÷ 3 8 - 3 9 + 4 10 - 12

  14. Expressions b divided by 6 the product of c and 15 the difference of 22 and d twice as many lunches as last week 3 more than the Yankees scored 5 less than a number 5 less a number b ÷ 6 or 15c 22-d 2l y + 3 n - 5 5 - n

  15. Equations 13 more than a number is 20 three times Henry’s age equals 12 twice a number equals 8 ten inches less than her height equals 21 **3 more than twice a number is 15 n + 13 = 20 3h = 12 2n = 8 h-10=21 2n + 3 = 15

  16. Using Parentheses in Algebraic ExpressionsSome Helpful Hints

  17. The presence/absence of parentheses in a problem, can make a big difference in how it is solved…..think about PEMDAS.(3 + 9) ÷ 3 3 + 9 ÷ 3

  18. When you see the words, quantity of, sum of, quotient of, product of , difference of, etc…, you will probably need to use parentheses (). • When there is a comma, you will probably need parentheses.

  19. Examples: 5 divided by the product of c and 7. The sum of 2 and b, divided by 9. The difference of 5 and b, multiplied by 13. 5 ÷ (7 x c) or You won’t need parentheses here, since the fraction bar is grouping it for you.
