Should we care? • According to Dr. Edward Sullivan, Analytical Studies, CSUF on 6/16/09 • “For first time freshmen in fall 2008 … About one quarter (25%) of the first time freshmen were first generation in college. 47% (or 818 students) of Hispanic first time freshmen were first generation in college.

  6. What are their challenges? • Identity struggles – support necessary • Career confusion – pressure to have career “planned out” • Imposter phenomenon – the perception that individual does not deserve to be in university • Have difficulties in persisting

  7. What can we do as Librarians? • From Dr. Rosa Moreno-Alcaraz, CSULB and Dr. Imelda Quintanar, CSUDH • Be mentors (build a relationship) if we can identify these students • Help them with professional and interpersonal skills • Recognize them as “strivers”

  8. What can we do? cont…. • Know they want your approval • Attempt to get them to move from academic shock to academic ownership • Speak to the part of them that wants to be here

  9. Things to Consider • Working more closely with campus student organizations • Working more closely with CPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) • Identify services in Library that might help identify these students and provide support
