  9. Compatibility test • quart glass jar • use same water (pH, debris) • W-A-L-E • WP or WDG • Agitate • Liquid products • Emulsifiable concentrates

  10. Compatibility test • shake • Heat may indicate incompatibility • stand for 15 minutes

  11. Application with Hand Sprayer • gloves and long pants • walk backwards to avoid walking through the chemical

  12. Equipment cleaning • clean as soon as possible to prevent drying • rinsate pad to collect waste • If no pad, move around • keep wearing PPE

  13. Rinsates • Apply rinsate to labeled area • Still contains pesticide

  14. Personal cleanup • take shower and wash hair and clothes

  15. Worker Protection Standard (WPS) • Provide information and training (EPA approved)

  16. Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Restricted-Entry Intervals Posting • Notification of applications • Danger Pesticides and Peligro Pestididas • REI for low risk: 4 to 12 hours

  17. Worker Protection Standard (WPS) PPE • Employer provides PPE

  18. Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Decontamination Stations • Water (1 pint), soap and disposable towels • At most ¼ mile away

  19. Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Safety Poster

  20. Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Recordkeeping • Kept for 2 years • Date, brand EPA registration #, quantity, area, and pest • MSDS

  21. Pesticide Certification Fees • Private, $10 every 5 years • in the production of an agricultural commodity (farm, nursery, greenhouse) on your or your employer’s property • Commercial, $50 per year • applying pesticides for hire, even on his/her employer's personal property • Noncommercial, exempt • an employee of a government agency, either federal, state, or local

  26. STORAGE SITE

  27. STORAGE MAINTENANCE • keep containers labeled • be aware of damaged containers • transfer to suitable container with label • shelf life, about 1 year • beware of flammable pesticides

  28. SPILL MANAGEMENT • -chemtrec 1-800-424-9300, for emergencies only • -to report spill, required to report to National Response Center 1-800-424-8802

  29. CONTROL, CONTAIN, AND CLEANUP Control • PPE • leaking container, place in a larger container • isolate from surrounding area

  30. CONTROL, CONTAIN, AND CLEANUP Containment • containment snakes or dam with soil • protect water sources • absorb liquids with sawdust, kitty litter • cover dry materials

  31. CONTROL, CONTAIN, AND CLEANUP Clean-up • swept into heavy-duty plastic drum or bag • dry pesticide can be re-applied

  32. CONTROL, CONTAIN, AND CLEANUP • nonporous floor, wash with water and detergent • carpet, wood, etc needs to be removed • neutralizing spill • bleach, then absorbent material • remove 2-3 inches of soil • may need to then mix in activated charcoal
