  1. PrimeEnergyIT

  2. The Project • PrimeEnergyIT charter • Market development for energy efficient central IT equipment • Hardware and service based energy efficiency criteria and metrics • Guidelines on energy efficient equipment and best practise • Education and training of IT and infrastructure managers and experts • Guidelines and criteria for procurement and management • SNIA Interest • Cooperate with energy efficiency protagonists • Propose energy efficiency standards and metrics • GSI – green storage initiative

  3. Contacts • Dr. Bernd Schäppi, PrimeEnergyIT Project manager Austrian Energy Agency • Thomas Bogner, PrimeEnergyIT Austrian Energy Agency • Laurent Lefèvre, INRIA RESO, LIP, ENS-Lyon, University of Lyon, France • Marcos Dias De Assuncao - Postdoctoral researcher INRIA RESO - LIP, ENS-Lyon, University of Lyon, France • http://www.efficientdatacenter.org/ • Dr. Alan Yoder, SNIA, GSI

  4. PrimeEnergyIT Project Charter • Division of DC infrastructures: • Data Storage Subsystems • Network equipment • Computing infrastructure • Power infrastructure • Charter for storage resides with the University of Lyon • Survey on datastorage subsystems by PrimeEnergyIT, including the SPC benchmarking suite and results have been performed • PrimeEntergyIT goal: Establish Energy metrics for DC infrastructure based on classes of service.Main interest: - Measurements of possible savings

  5. SNIA publications • Best Practices for Energy Efficient Storage Operations • Tom Clark and Alan Yoder • One off white paper – no updates • http://www.snia.org/forums/green/knowledge/GSI_Best_Practices_V1.0_FINAL.pdf • SNIA Green power specification draft • http://www.snia-europe.org/en/Download/document-summary.cfm?docid=0B428684-1B54-4441-991BD318373B761B

  6. SNIA development • SNIA Green Storage Initiative draft • The initial draft Green Storage Power Measurement Specification defines a baseline standard for idle power metrics which can be applied as a uniform method for collecting idlepower consumption measurements. It also includes a “Green Storage Taxonomy” for classifying storage products based on energy consumption characteristics and application environments.  • On the SNIA side, the Green Power spec has been delayed by auditing issues and concerns. • We hope to have it published by mid-summer now, and a copy will be out for membership vote before then.

  7. Other interested parties • ITU-T • ITU-T Study Group 5 - Environment and climate change • Study Group 5 is the ITU-T Study Group responsible for studies on methodologies for evaluating the ICT effects on climate change and publishing guidelines for using ICTs in an eco-friendly way. Under its environmental mandate SG 5 is also responsible for studying design methodologies to reduce environmental effects, for example recycling of ICT facilities and equipment. • EU Commission • Best Practices and Code of conduct for Data Centres • http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/activities/sustainable_growth/docs/datacenter_code-conduct.pdf • http://re.jrc.ec.europa.eu/energyefficiency/pdf/CoC%20DC%20new%20rep%20form%20and%20guidelines/Best%20Practices%20v2.0.0%20-%20Release.pdf

  8. Next steps • Desired areas of collaboration • Service based metrics • Evaluation of performance and capacity vs power consumption • Load profiles • Transactional, file, archive etc. • Storage power consumptionPower benchmark - what is planned? • SPECpower for storage & network & computing ? • reference: specPower ssj • The ISO Study Group on Green Energy IT would like to know if PrimeEnergyIT would like to participate in the ISO process, or alternatively, contribute any specification material to an eventual standard • Which plans does PrimeEnergyIT have to develop actual normative specifications? • Looking into coming up with their own specs if Industry fails to deliver
