  1. Same Sex Marriage Artisha Grant January 28, 2013 Capstone Presentation

  2. Why is it that nearly 70% of people in the U.S. are opposed to same-sex marriage? Maybe religion plays a part in that, but first amendment clearly states freedom of religion, does that not include Freedom from religion?

  3. Defining Marriage Marriage defined by the web is “ the state of being a married couple voluntarily joined for life.” They’re aren’t specifications for it being 100% heterosexual.

  4. Equality We are a country founded on equality not discrimination. Its our ignorance that leads us to believe same-sex marriage is wrong. We should chow more understanding to homosexuality.

  5. Pro’s & Con’s Pro’s • Gay marriage is protected by the Constitution's commitments to liberty and equality. • Gay marriages can bring financial gain to state and local governments. Revenue from gay marriage comes from marriage licenses, higher income taxes (the so-called "marriage penalty"), and decreases in costs for state benefit programs • Gay marriage will make it easier for same-sex couples to adopt children. In the US, 100,000 children are waiting to be adopted (319 KB) • Con’s • The institution of marriage has traditionally been defined as between a man and a woman. • Marriage is already threatened with high divorce rates (between 40% and 50%) (851 KB) and with 40.6% of babies being born to unmarried mothers (312 KB) in 2008. Allowing same-sex couples to marry would further weaken the institution • Gay marriage is incompatible with the beliefs, sacred texts, and traditions of many religious groups

  6. Support Same Sex Marriage Love can develop between ANY ONE, ANY RACE, ANY GENDER & ANYWHERE Love is Love No Matter WHO it is between. Legalizing gay marriage is legalizing love, juts because their Love is between the same gender, makes it no different than the love formed between a man and women !

  7. Homosexual Fun Facts 1. The first Gay Pride parades were held the weekend of June 27 and 28, 1970 in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. They were organized to commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.2. The rainbow flag as a gay pride symbol made its debut at the San Francisco Pride Parade in 1978. Harvey Milk asked his good friend Gilbert Baker to design a unifying symbol for the gay community and the rainbow flag was the result.3. The original rainbow flag had eight colors. It included hot pink and turquoise, symbolizing sexuality and art. These colors were taken out later due to production constraints and the need for design symmetry.4. The largest rainbow flag used in a Pride celebration was unfurled in Key West, Florida for the flag’s 25th anniversary in 2003. The flag was one and a quarter miles long and 16 feet wide and stretched across the entire island. It was later divided up to be displayed at dozens of Pride events across the globe.5. The first mayor to take part in a Pride Parade was San Francisco’s George Moscone in 1978.6. The first mayor to ban a city’s Pride Parade was Yuri Luzhkov in Moscow, Russia in 2006.7. Amsterdam is the only city whose Pride celebration literally floats on a river. The parade takes place on 100 decorated boats that sail through the city on the Prinsengracht River.8. New York City hosts the longest parade route, stretching from Midtown to the West Village, a total of three miles.
