How do you think his relationship with them will change?

  3. Author:Daniel Keyes The idea for Flowers for Algernon came to me many years before I wrote the story or the novel. "What would happen if it were possible to increase human intelligence artificially?" The idea for the character came about four years later when I met and spoke to a retarded young man and thought how wonderful it would be if such a technique were available to help the mentally disadvantaged. But Charlie Gordon is not real, nor is he based on a real person: he is imagined or invented, probably a composite of many people I know -- including a little bit of me. After a great many false starts, I discovered the technique of the Progress Reports. With these three elements: the idea, the character, and the narrative strategy, I was well on my way.

  7. Do Now On page 47, Dr. Strauss tells Charlie, “The more intelligent you become the more problems you’ll have, Charlie. Your intellectual growth is going to outstrip your emotional growth.” Using the text and your prior knowledge to support your opinion, do you agree with Dr. Strauss? Why or why not?

That frightened me, because for the first time I began to think about what God means.” At this junction, why do you believe Charlie is beginning to question the existence of God? Is religion part of a different conscience he has never before accessed, or does it come from a place of insecurity and loss?

Why do you think Progress Report 13 ends in this fashion? What is the significance of finding his parents now?
