  4. Ancient Astronomy Astronomy began in the ancient kingdoms of Sumer, Assyria, and Babylonia . They noticed stars and planets rising They recorded the information

  5. Egypt • It has been shown the Pyramids were aligned towards the pole star. • Movements and phases of the sun, moon and stars recorded

  6. Aristotle( 384-322BC) • He believed the Earth was round • Rationale was that is cast a curved shadow when it passed the sun and moon

  7. Eratosthenes • First to establish the size of the Earth • His % error was only 1.7%

  8. Hipparchus (100BC) • Cataloged Stars • Measured the length of the Year

  9. Geocentric Model • The moon, sun, and the known planets—Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter—orbit Earth. • Ethnocentrism- idea that WE are the center of the universe

  10. Heliocentric Model • Earth and the other planets orbit the sun. • Clearly this is the model we know today to be true.

  11. Astrology Vs Astronomy • Astrology is the study of how the planets and stars affect human affairs. • A horoscope consists of a geocentric map of the solar system at a given moment in time based on a person’s date, time, and place of birth.
