  2. Monday morning • Ben runs down the stairs in his apartment building, taking two at a time. He rushes out onto Yonge Street, the smell of gasoline and trash filling his lungs. People are knocked out of the way as he sprints towards the subway station, checking the time over and over, even though he knows it won’t show that he’s suddenly on time. A line of people stand at the tollbooth, caught behind an old man who argues over the rate. Ben throws a handful of change towards the collection booth and hops over the gate as a southbound train pulls in. In his panic, he doesn’t notice that the train is a little different than normal. That changes when he walks inside. It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust to the abnormally bright environment. A light fills the cabin, and when he looks for a source, the sun stares back in answer. That’s impossible, he thinks, and as he takes a seat he studies the view of a rolling landscape. The sun shines on a grassy plain, flashing off the surface of a churning river. The panic subsides, and for a moment, Ben forgets why he was rushing in the first place.
