  2. What Is An Ocelot? • An ocelot is a highly endangered breed of wild cat. • The ocelot typically weighs between 20 and 33 pounds, (10 to 15 kilograms) • There lifespan is about 8-11 years in the wild and 20 years in captivity. • The ocelot is a nocturnal species, and generally quite solitary, though it will sometimes share a den with an ocelot of the same gender.

  3. What Does It Look Like? • The Ocelot has beautiful fur. • The Ocelot has fur that looks a lot like a Cheetahs. • It has tan and brown fur that is soft.

  4. Survival Tactics • Ocelots are carnivores. • Their diet consist of smaller animals such as rodents, rabbits, young deer, birds, snakes, and fish. • Their prey is constantly being killed so the Ocelots may not be getting as fulfilling meals as they are used to getting. • The ocelot has a very strong sense of smell, and will follow prey by scent; it also has very good night vision that makes it easy to track animals.

  5. Habitat/ Location • Ocelots live in Central and South America. Today only about 120 live in Texas. • They range from mangrove forests to Savannah grasslands and pastures. • They also live in thorn scrubs and tropical forests. • All of these habitats provide only live dense vegetative cover. • There is habitat destruction for agriculture. • People are cutting down their habitat for farmland.

  6. Predators • Man, Bobcats, Coyotes, Jaguars, and Mountain Lions. • People are hunting the Ocelot for it’s fur and meat. • Cars are also a predator to ocelots. • Many ocelots are hit and killed in South America and Texas. When this happens the animals are left dead on the roads for the buzzards to eat. Most people don’t care and just leave.

  7. Interesting Facts • Footprint looks like an everyday cat’s foot but 3 to 4 times bigger • Can run 20 square miles and Can swim • Today, scientists estimate that there are probably less than 100 wild ocelots in the United States. • An ocelot fur coat can be sold for $40,000 US Dollars, or more, and many people keep live ocelots as pets, for which they are willing to pay thousands of dollars.
