Exploring the Impact of the First Past the Post System
In this lesson, students will delve into the First Past the Post (FPTP) voting system, analyzing its positive and negative effects. Working in groups of 3 or 4, students will evaluate outcomes such as majority governments, representation of smaller parties, and the implications of single-member constituencies. After examining the system's impacts, they will engage in a class discussion to share their insights and reasoning. This activity encourages critical thinking and collaborative learning about electoral systems.

Lesson Objectives • I will get the opportunity to consider the positive and negative impact of the FPTP system • I will get the opportunity to participate in a group to evaluate and report on the impact of the FPTP system
Task • Look at the effects of the FPTP system on the next slide • Your task is, in groups of 3 or 4, to decide whether they are positives of the system or negatives andexplain why • You can of course say they are positives and negatives, but you must always explain your reasons • Once you have completed this task, you will get a chance to put forward your views as part of a discussion
Effects of the FPTP system • Majority governments are usually formed • Only one representative is elected from each area(single member constituencies) • Smaller parties are usually excluded • By-Elections can take place • FPTP creates safe seats • Results are rarely proportional • Not all votes count
