  27. 1 Orbit vs TruSeal (& Twin Seal) Mechanics of Actuation • Both valves require a lifting motion on the valve stem to disengage the seat and rotate the ball or plug • The mechanical twisting action required to turn the ball or plug is incorporated into the valve stem housing (referred to as the operator housing) • The Orbit valve uses a very steep cam slot (1) which supports actuation Orbit Rising Stem Ball Valve

  28. 2 Orbit vs TruSeal (& Twin Seal) • The TruSeal valve uses a shallow cam slot when supplied with a manual handwheel (2) • The shallow cam slot does not support actuation • An automated TruSeal valve must be configured with a 404 Series operator housing, which has a steep cam slot • An existing manual TruSeal valve would require modifications for actuation • The General Twin Seal plug valve can not be actuated with the Bettis GVO linear actuator • Both the lift and twist motion must be generated by the actuator TruSeal Rising Stem Plug Valve

  29. Valve Action & Thrust Definition

  30. Actuator Design Features The GVO Series of linear valve actuators incorporates the following features: • External tie bars allow contained release of energy in the event of over-pressure and allow ease of inspection and servicing • Spring rod nut is locked to prevents unauthorized disassemble of the spring cartridge • Adjustable travel stop for the rod-retract position; piston bottoms out for the rod-extend position. For specific travel applications, consult factory • Removable mounting pedestal allows field adaption to the valve • Swivel stem connector for ease of installation and stroke adjustment • 70 durometer Nitrile seals are standard, other seal materials available upon request

  31. A B Design Features (cont.) • Piston wear band, drive rod bushing and polyurethane rod wiper are standard for all models • Pneumatic cylinder material is hard anodized aluminum, 2” thru 8”, and fiber composite for sizes 10” and above (Chrome plated carbon steel is available as an option). • Cylinder plate and endcap material is carbon steel; optional aluminum for 2” thru 8” • Cylinder plate incorporates a pneumatic distribution groove to maximize break-out thrust • Drive rod material is carbon steel chrome plated; option for stainless steel • Factory finish is Bettis Orange gloss alkyd enamel to RAL 2002 (other colors and coatings available upon request)

  32. Specifications and Certifications • The GVO Series of linear valve actuators are designed and manufactured as follows: • Pressure rating of 150 psig MAWP (custom pressure ratings available) • Static pressure test to 225 psig • Standard operating temperature range -23º C to +74º C (-10º F to +165º F) • Low temperature option available, -40º C to + 65º C (-40º F to +150º F) for 2” to 14” type DA • XLT -46º C to + 65º C (-50º F to +150º F) for 16” to 24” type DA and all SR/FS models • High temperature option available, -17º C to + 204º C (+1º F to +400º F) • NPTF cylinder porting, with side porting on the cylinder plate • Actuators designed and manufactured under an accredited ISO 9001:2000 QA program • Consult factory for CE compliant actuators

  33. Actuator Types – DA (Double Acting) In DA actuators, the pneumatic or hydraulic supply fluid is required to move the piston both up and down. Air / Hydraulic Air / Hydraulic

  34. Actuator Types – SR (Spring Return) In SR actuators, the supply fluid is required to move the piston up. The spring moves the piston down when the supply fluid is removed. Air / Hydraulic

  35. Actuator Types – FS (Fail Safe) In FS actuators, the supply fluid is required to move the piston down. The spring moves the piston up when the supply fluid is removed. Air / Hydraulic

  36. Bettis Linear Actuator Types • Double Acting • “DA” type • Spring Return • “SR” - Fail Extended • “FS” - Fail Retracted FS SR DA

  37. Valve Action & Thrust Output(Springs) • The action of the valve must be matched to the corresponding thrust output position of the GVO

  38. Optional Mounting Interface • The GVO linear actuator incorporates a standard open pedestal valve mounting adaption/interface • The welded pedestal is manufactured from 2 steel channels and is removable from the actuator • One end of the pedestal is machined for bolting to the GVO actuator • The opposite end can be supplied as a blank to be machined later and fitted to the respective valve off-site • If the valve top-works are provided with the order, the pedestal can be custom machined by Bettis • The open pedestal allows for easy visual position indication, access to packing glands and is suitable for installing a positioner and/or travel position switches

  39. Optional Swivel Stem Connector • The GVO linear actuator can be supplied with, or without, the valve stem connector • If ordered, the valve stem dimensional information would be required and the valve-nut part of the connector would be machined at the factory to match the respective valve stem • The Bettis 3-piece swivel connector allows ease of assembly to the valve stem without the need to rotate the complete actuator as well as allowing for a certain degree of misalignment • The rod-extend travel adjustment (down stop) can safely be made after the actuator has been secured to the valve • Optional features include hammer-blow effect couplings, shear couplings, anti-rotation pin and travel position switch triggers

  40. Pedestal with 3 Piece Swivel Connector Assembly • Welded connector • Allows easy assembly to valve stem • Allows travel stop engagement • Triggers limit switches • Allows over-thrust protection (Orbit valves)

  41. Manual Jackscrew Override • The GVO Series of linear valve actuators are available with a unidirectional manual jackscrew handwheel override (‘-MJ’) for emergency use when plant air or power gas is unavailable • The ‘MJ’ override can also be used to hold the actuator in a particular position • For models where a jackscrew override is not feasible due to high thrust requirements, dimensional clearance or lack of accessibility, a manual hydraulic override is available • The ‘MJ’ override is not available for type ‘SR’ actuators

  42. SIGNAL Component List 1) Actuator 2) Line Valve 7) Flow Control Valve 8) Switching Relay 10) Handpump 11) Fluid Reservoir 16) Manual Selector Valve 34) Relief Valve SUPPLY Hydraulic Manual Override • Available with a manual hydraulic override (-’MH’), bidirectional for double-acting and unidirectional for spring-return (type ‘FS’ or ‘SR’) • The ‘MH’ override can also be used as a dampener for precise control of the cylinder speed • Consult factory for availability on GVO-LP-DA models 2” through 14” ‘-DA’ ‘-SR’
