Advantages of linking the CV database and the Alumni database
Career Services central/local • Lund University / Career Services Centre • Local Career Centres around the faculties • Lund University centrally / VentureLab - focus on entrepreneurship Background • Career Services Centre started as a pilot project in 1996 with SACO (union) • Local career centres were later started at different faculties. • The School of Economics and Management: system for handling the career fairs (CV-database) in 2000.
The need for a database • Due to a larger inflow of internships, jobs and thesis assignments from companies and organisations all around the faculties, there was a need centrally for a system that could handle these kinds of assignments. • Companies also showed a greater interest in recruting Lund University alumni. • Our alumni expressed that the reason for them studying at Lund University was to create a career for themselves and they wanted to keep in touch with us in their career development. • Alumni can act as both employer and as employee/job seeker • The School of Economics and Management needed a better system for handling CVs and organizing contact interviews during the career fairs.
Solution • Overall perspective – one entry point for companies and organisations in search of students and alumni – more flexible and uniform for us.
Benefits • Overall perspective – one entry point for companies and organisations – more flexible and uniformly for us. • Convenient for students – one registration, match mails, invitations to career fairs and other career activities. • A better tool for organizing contact interviews and CVs for career fairs – registering, matching, scheduling. • Facilitates handling students and alumni in the same system, alumni can act both as employers and job seekers. • The system gives us a good overview of which companies and organisations that are looking to hire students and alumni and that participate in career fairs. It also shows us where our alumni are employed.
Pilot launch at the School of Economics and Management in September 2008 • Samday 2008: - Career Fair in October 2008 for Finance- and IT-students - The CV-database is used for registering for interviews • Full capacity in December 2009 • eee2009: - Career Fair in February 2009 • The CV-database is used for interviews – registering, matching and scheduling • All together 410 students registered for 481 interviews in 2009.
www.cv.lu.se Vice-Chancellor Per Eriksson and Pro Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson officiallyopened the CV-database on October 14th 2009.
Employers and students Employers • Jobs – full-time, part-time • Thesis assignments • Postdoc • Internships • Traineeships • Career Fairs Students • CV • Career Fairs • Career Profile • Match mails and information about career acitivities
Usage of the database:Example 1 – Employer registering an ad • The employer registeres for a user account - we approve it • The employer places the ad to be shown in the database – we approve it • The ad is published on a public website and is e-mailed to the students in the database that have registered for matchmails. • Students can then apply for the position, either by sending in their application through the system or by ”standard procedure”.
Usage of the database:Example 2 – Career fairs are arranged by student unions • The career fair is advertised in the database by the student union • Students and companies can register for the career fair directly in the system. • Companies can indicate what criteria the students have to fulfill in order to schedule an interview with them. • In the meantime the students can choose which companies they are interested in meeting.
Career fairs – interviews • The matching process of the interviews can be organized in different ways: • Direct matching between company and student from their mutual criteria • Students rank which companies they want to meet and they are matched with the companies based on this information and on how they meet the criteria from the company • We send the CVs from the system and let the companies choose witch students they want to have the ability to schedule interviews with them.
Career fairs – interviews • When the matching process is completed the students recieve information about which companies they can schedule interviews with and they also recieve information about when the booking starts (first come first served) • When the students have scheduled their interviews the system creates a personal schedule with information about time and place for each interview. • The companies can also access their own schedules and the CVs of the student they are going to meet.
Benefits • A way of getting more students interested in registering themselves in the database. • The same system for both current students and alumni – students are automatically changed from ”students status” to ”alumni status” in the system upon graduation. • Both current students and alumni have access to available job listings. • Employers have access to both students, graduates and alumni • We explain how the connection between current students and alumni is to their advantage in their careers – a strong professional focus and a connection to Lund University after graduation. • Future plans – open a forum where students and alumni can meet and interact.
Current status • 500 company profiles • 2500 registered students • 200-400 listed ads per week
