  2. What is Current Electricity? There are two types of current electricity; Direct Current and Alternating Current.

  4. Direct Current • Direct Current is the continuous movement of electrons from an area of negative (−) charges to an area of positive (+) charges through a conducting material such as a metal wire.

  5. History of Direct Current • “The first commercial electric power transmission (developed by Thomas Edison in the late nineteenth century) used direct current.”

  7. DC is used for • Charging batteries •  railway propulsion • Nearly all electronics that use a power supply. • Power electric trolleys

  8. Good and Bad things about DC Good: • powers small electronics • uses low voltages • Bad: • Doesn’t power large electronics

  9. The Basic DC Circuit When to the on-off switch on the potential energy (voltage) is built up on one end of the wire which forces the electrons to flow to the other side where the area of positive charges are. In the end, it causes the bulb to light up.

  10. Alternating Current • Alternating Current is current switching directions. The positive charges as well as the negative charges alternate to product electricity.

  11. History of Alternating Current • “William Stanley, Jr. designed one of the first practical devices to transfer AC power efficiently between isolated circuits. Using pairs of coils wound on a common iron core, his design, called an induction coil, was an early transformer. The AC power system used today developed rapidly after 1886, and includes key concepts by Nikola Tesla, who subsequently sold his patent to George Westinghouse. Lucien Gaulard, John Dixon Gibbs, Carl Wilhelm Siemens and others contributed subsequently to this field.”

  14. Good and bad things about AC Good: • powers household things. • More efficient than DC • Cheaper • Powers over longer distances • Bad: • More complex than DC • Harder to use • Harder to understand

  15. Basic AC Generator(Alternater) “The polarity of the voltage across the wire coils reverses as the opposite poles of the rotating magnet pass by. Connected to a load, this reversing voltage polarity will create a reversing current direction in the circuit. The faster the alternator's shaft is turned, the faster the magnet will spin, resulting in an alternating voltage and current that switches directions more often in a given amount of time. “

  16. Equation In order to find voltage, resistance, and current for both AC and DC, one could use voltmeters. Voltages=V= I x R Current= I= V/R Resistance= R= V/I

  17. Static Electricity vs. Current Electricity • Static Electricity is the unbalanced of charges. (opposite charges attract.) • Examples: • Frizzy hair • Balloon sticking to the wall • Static shock
