  1. Core Competency #2 Constructed by A. Reid Murphy Apply social work ethical principles to guide professional practice

  2. Generalist Practice Behavior 2.1 Recognize and manage personal values in a way that allows professional values to guide practice • When working with a diverse population, I must recognize and attend to the reality that my personal values and beliefs will rarely match those of my clients. • Working with children in a school setting, I will witness parenting skills that differ from mine. By understanding these differences, I will allow my professional values to guide my practice.

  3. Generalist Practice Behavior 2.2 Make ethical decisions by applying standards of the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and, as applicable, of the International Federation of Social Workers/International Association of Schools of Social Work Ethics in Social Work, Statement of Principles • By constantly referring to the NASW Code of Ethics, I will ensure that all my actions and behaviors are performed within the scope of these documents. • Social workers are often faced with problems with unclear solutions and by abiding by this useful resource, our decisions will be, at the very least, ethical.

  4. Generalist Practice Behavior 2.3 Tolerate ambiguity in resolving ethical conflicts • I may face a ethical dilemma in which the solution to the issue is unclear or I am not equipped with all the facts. Accepting these roadblocks is vital as I refer to the NASW Code of Ethics for further guidance.

  5. Generalist Practice Behavior 2.4 Apply strategies of ethical reasoning to arrive at principled decisions • Utilizing the NASW Code of Ethics, along with my own morally-focused principles, will allow for the best decision to be made in regards to the agency and the client. • For example, working with children will require me to think of my own children and how I would want them to be treated as I make a decision on their personal or educational future.
