This report outlines the methodologies used to document environmental crimes, social impacts, and trade links in forested areas. Key elements include ground research, overflights, document collection, photo documentation, and recording testimonies. Ground research allows for detailed verification of data and engagement with local communities. Overflights facilitate rapid coverage of large areas and provide aerial visual evidence. The report emphasizes the importance of collecting relevant documentation and establishing connections for future information gathering, supported by a comprehensive trip report with findings and observations.

Forest Field Research Prepared by Maik Marahrens Consultant June 2006
Objectives Documenting….. • …..environmental crimes • …..social impacts • …..trade links
Key elements • Ground research / Overflights • Collecting documents • Photo documentation • Recording testimonies • Observations • Establishing contacts
Ground research • Ground research • Allows more detailed documentation and verification of remotely gathered data • Allows collecting testimonies • Shows Greenpeace is “on the ground”, not only behind desks
Overflights • Allow covering large areas in little time • Provide aerial close up image of destruction – often very impressive • Sometimes the only choice in otherwise unaccessible areas
Collecting documents Examples: • Ownership documents • Concession boundary maps • Permits • Documents on trade links
Photo documentation • Before going into the field, exact needs of images need to be determined • Images need to be geo-referencable (GPS position) • Images need to allow identification of area • Close ups need to go along with overview shots
Recording testimonies • Help to tell the story from a human perspective • Give local people a voice • Need to be recorded properly • Need (if possible) identification of person interviewed • Make sure it is clear, what people really talk about (e.g. the concession of your interest or the neighbouring one?)
Observations • “only” reference is researcher himself • Bring “Greenpeace on the ground” back into the picture • Help to give color to our stories (e.g. personal observation of orang utan, sun bear etc. in concession area)
Establishing contacts Important for • …..future information gathering • …..future logistical support
Trip Report • Who, when, where • Short description of goals • Short summary of main findings • Map with GPS way points • Detailed account of what results, illustrated with images taken • Images with clear captions (what is on image, GPS position) • List of contacts made • Remarks (difficulties, side issues, future research options/needs)
