The intestines are lined with many layers of muscles that move food through in a rhythmic manner. IBS causes food to move too quickly or too slowly, causing pain bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. The exact cause of IBS is unknown and up to 20% of Americans experience at IBS at any one time. The best form of treatment is relaxation, mindful eating of small, light meals, and reducing the amount of stimulants like coffee as well as limiting the amount of alcohol consumed. • How does yoga help easeIBS? • The digestive track is closely aligned to our emotional health. When we experience a high degree of stress, we can develop or exacerbate conditions such as ulcers, acid reflux, and IBS. Relaxation is one of the many benefits of yoga and therefore can provide relief for those who have IBS. • What poses should we avoid when we are challenged with IBS? • It’s very important to have a well-balanced practice so counter postures are vital. For example, after practicing a few forward bends, make sure to counter those with a few backbends. After doing a twist in one direction, repeat on the other side • A daily practice that consists of a few minutes of deep breathing and quiet meditation is also very beneficial.
