  2. Purpose for the Hour…. • 1-Make us all THINK about our own philosophy on when to throw a flag and when not to • 2-Answer questions and discuss anything related to fouls and/or football officiating

  3. Agreement • Be OPEN to a CHANGING YOUR THINKING • Avoid “Well, what I do is…………” • Learn at least ONE thing to better your game • No magic bullets

  4. This ISN’T a FOUL….just bad mechanics…..

  5. Universal Truths about Calling Fouls • Players, coaches, fans and media didn’t come to see us or be impressed by our ability to throw flags. • More problems come from flags thrown that AREN’T fouls than NO CALLS • The MORE YOU THROW, THE LOWER YOU GO • No one likes a KNOW IT ALL……..

  6. Considerations • Impact on the GAME • Impact on the PLAY • Safety Fouls: Can someone get injured? • Will it SHOW UP? • Did you see it ALL? • Game Situation…

  7. ALWAYS A FOUL….. • Safety Fouls: Clip, Chop, PF • OH: Takedowns at POA, Zone 1 • DPI: Obvious • FST: Obvious • Late Hits: Obvious • KCI Contact • RPS/R. Kicker: Obvious

  8. SOMETIMES A FOUL: • OH: Twist/Turn, Zone 2 • FST: Flinches • ILF: No man’s land, post warning • DPI: Close timing, incidental contact, OPI • KCI: Non Contact

  9. RARELY A FOUL….. • FST: Small flinches • ILF: Blowouts, First Quarter, less than yard off • OH: Behind Play, Good Feet, Zone 3 • Side blocks that look like IBW • Weird fouls: DH, Aiding Runner, Equipment

  10. Questions to ASK • Did I see it ALL? • Does it impact the GAME? • If you DIDN’T call it, would anyone notice? • Would you call it on the last play of the 6A State Finals in a tie ball game?

  11. MANTRAS • That’s a Hold, That’s a Hold, IT’S A HOLD. • If I hesitate, I don’t throw it • It’s rarely as bad as it looks • Make the picture look right • Never insert yourself in the GAME • Don’t Trouble Trouble • Common Sense Always Prevails • BS spoken with authority is often better than the truth

  12. FILM DISCUSSION
