  2. Agenda for Today’s Elluminate Session • Site reports and preparation for weekend on campus • Scott Wing – Prehistoric Leaf Study – research question? • Reading a Scientific Paper (Pataki) - Section Reports

  3. Site Preparation 1)Intro – general location of your site (eg. Durham County SWETNET Site) and your names 2) Map 1. – jpg showing the position of your site in NC; name of the river basin (Neuse, probably) and general geographic location (piedmont) 3) Map 2. – Site detail in .jpg format with outline of site showing and type of site (public property, private property etc.) 4) Map 3. – Interactive – a slide with a link to the .kmz file that marks the site and and key features (eg. power source)  This link can be included on the same slide as Map 2. 5) Map 4. – Outline of site showing the relative distances between key trees (red maple, yellow poplar and sweetgum), power source, major heat sources, major light sources.  The distances between these features, the height and diameter at breast height of the selected trees, can be shown on the map or in a table or some combination of both. 6) Summary of Pros and Cons of the site

What did scientists at Wyoming’s Big Horn Basin want to find out? 3. What can studying the soil and rocks tell scientists about the climate 55 million years ago? 4. What did soil scientist hypothesize about the climate back then? 5. What kind of plant fossils did scientists find? 6. What two hypotheses does paleobotanist Scott Wing propose for this abundance and diversity of legumes? 7. What current research supports these hypotheses? 8. Why are vertebrate paleontologists particularly interested in the PETM?
