  2. Method 1 - Felling a Tree 1. Put on safety equipment before you chop down the tree.

  3. 2. Clear the area surrounding the tree.

  4. 3. Determine which way the tree will fall.

  5. 4. Plan 2 different escape routes in case of emergency.

  6. 5. Make an angled cut into the side of the tree.

  7. 6. Turn your saw or axe sideways and cut horizontally.

  8. 7. Make your escape route as the tree falls.

  9. Method 2 - Taking the Stump Out 1. Dig your stump out by hand for smaller trees.

  10. 2. Try a chemical stump remover for the simplest method.

  11. 3. Burn the stump out if it's permitted in your area.

  12. 4. Use a stump grinder for the quickest method.

  13. Method 3 - Removing Small Trees for Transplant 1. Water the soil surrounding the tree the day before you remove it.

  14. 2. Remove the topsoil surrounding the top roots.

  15. 3. Dig the roots out with a spade.

  16. 4. Dig underneath the root ball and pull it out of the ground.
