  1. EDUU 551 Chapter 1 Key Themes & Issues for Using Technology in Your Classroom

  2. Restructuring Schools “Educators are talking more and more about the need to restructure schools.”

  3. Educators have common goals for their students • Goals need to be realistic • In a restructured setting teachers would function as a facilitator and the students work collaboratively • Educators would emphasize and encourage students to integrate and apply knowledge

  4. Standards “The attempt to define standards is shaping much of the debate about school reform and hence the role that technology ultimately will play in the classroom.”

  5. Standards are guidelines for teachers to follow and focus on to lead to a common curriculum in education • It’s a way to define what students should learn and what teachers should teach • It’s been said that alignment and reform are better understood rather than demanding the same curriculum for all students • Technology can be a great way to receive information for both students and educators

  6. Teacher Training “Change at all levels of education, which does not come easily, starts with each of us.”

  7. Schools are slowly becoming more technological • Colleges don’t always have any better equipment than a K-12 institution has • Number of college professors may be unwilling to change • Not all schools are prepared with all the resources needed • It will take a combination of ALL of us to help learn and keep up our growing society

  8. Teacher Attitudes “Teachers are used to being in control of their environments and in command of the content they teach.”

  9. Seasoned teachers are afraid and reluctant to change and it makes them nervous • Studies have shown new, younger teachers aren’t using technology in the classroom anymore than current teachers • Teachers need adequate, regular training and the enthusiasm and energy will follow • Technology can be overwhelming, but if teachers have support it can be a great addition to any curriculum

  10. Change “Technology may represent the critical element in reintroducing these ideas in a sustainable way and in allowing activity-based learning to play a more prominent role in K-12 education.”

  11. Studies in the past have shown students had more positive attitudes towards certain subjects and had a better understanding of concepts when participating in activity-based activities. • Students were more advanced in their creativity and used higher levels of thinking • Due to lack of funds and support teachers weren’t able to locate hands-on activities • Today, hardware and software in schools can involve students in active learning by use of technology • It can be more stimulating than reading a book or listening to a lecture

  12. The End “Integrating technology in your classroom may take baby steps. Take one step at a time and before you know it you will enjoy it and your students will too!”
