What We Do Our services are targeted towards:- • support to parents before and around the birth of their baby, or diagnosis of the disability • support to the child and family on educational matters • specialised information and help on health matters • helping young people access services to progress towards control of their lives • responding to the needs of adults with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus

  4. HYDROCEPHALUS

  5. Definition of Hydrocephalus • Hydrocephalus comes from the Greek ‘hydro’ meaning water and ‘cephalie’ meaning brain • Hydrocephalus can result when either too much cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is produced, or when it is prevented from circulating or being reabsorbed

  6. Treatments • Insertion of a shunt • Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV)

  7. Social Issues • Difficulty in group situations • Literal thinking: coping with irony, humour, sarcasm • Difficulties with empathy • Social immaturity • Hidden disability

  10. What is Spina Bifida? • Spina bifida means ‘split spine’ • In spina bifida, the bones do not close round the spinal cord and the nerves can bulge out on the unborn baby’s back and become damaged

  12. Spina Bifida May Affect: • Mobility • Sensation • Circulation • Bowel and bladder control • Sexual functioning

  13. Sexual Functioning • Loss of sensation • Erectile dysfunction • Retrograde ejaculation • Low fertility

  14. NB • Latex allergy is common in people with spina bifida. • It can produce severe anaphylaxis and death, even • in people who were not aware they were sensitive • or have had previous contact with latex • Folic Acid and the prevention of neural tube defects
