What do you observe about your partner's nonverbal communication (touch, paralinguistic, body language, or personal space) and do you think it has had any influence from those categories listed above?

12. End of Class Student Comment Having the ability to see first hand what immigration to America is like for a fourth grader really opens eyes.
13. End of Class Student Comment Responding to the questions in the journal really helped apply what we were learning to our experience, which helped me to learn more.
14. End of Class Student Comment I do believe the service learning helped me learn sociology. I have always grown up and been around all white people, and I was unaware what diverse schools were like and the struggles they faced.
15. End of Class Student Comment I think I learned so much about immigration coming from a slightly prejudiced family. I had a bias and fear of immigrants with no real basis. Now though, when my mom makes racist comments, I know what to say, to argue about. I also think that learning about immigration helped me get a new perspective on life, so I learned about life things, not just the facts.
16. End of Class Student Comment It opened my eyes to all the injustices and hardships immigrants face. It made me more understanding towards immigrants, which is hard to understand for a non-immigrant. It applied things that we learned from the readings to real life.
17. End of Class Student Comment Over the course of the semester, I felt like I was making little or no progress with my buddy. I was often frustrated with different aspects of the program and felt as if I was useless and not helping my buddy at all. After the goodbye party, my view on the program changed. The day that I left my buddy, he told me that I was his best friend and that he did not want me to leave.
18. End of Class Student Comment It has become so evident that every person, no matter their age, color, gender, or appearance just wants to be appreciated and know that someone is there for them. We are all worthy of being treated with respect and dignity and this should never be dependent on physical traits and characteristics. I only wish that more people realized this, and that I, myself, had realized this sooner than at age 19.
19. End of Class Student Comment It has been a great experience for me, and a good opportunity for me to spend time and be around people of another ethnic background than me. My view on immigrants has definitely changed from this project. From hearing things about my partners family, I now know how hard they work to make a life for themselves and their families in America. And how they arent all bad people. This project was a worthwhile learning experience!
20. End of Class Student Comment So, my experiences with J. have been like an emotional rollercoaster ride. I just never know what to expect. The last time I wrote to you, I thought this girl absolutely wanted nothing to do with me. Then I come back to the final time with her and she has told me that she has invited her father and siblings to come and be with us. That makes me think that I have made a big enough impact on this little girls life that she wants me to meet her family.
21. End of Class Student Comment Knowing that his mother has two jobs and she barely gets to see her children, this is very sad. I never knew what that was like growing up, because my mom didnt have to work and she was always with us. So it made me do a lot of thinking and reflection on my life and the opportunities that I have been given. It is amazing how much a little kid can influence and make you think about life, your attitude, and beliefs.
