  1. The Poppy Project Students in the art department have been asked to produce Poppies to contribute to a community arts piece to be sited at the war memorial in Werrington. Over three thousand poppies were made by a whole range of different groups in the local community- from cubs and brownies through to ladies who lunch and the Salvation Army. The Sculpture will be a focal point for the Remembrance service on Sunday 8th November 2015.

  2. Poppies have been constructed from the base of used bottles of pop. First we cut out the flower shape, then we painted them using Acrylic. The fun part was burning the petals so that they twisted curled round making floral like shapes. We drilled the centres and threaded them with wire and then embellished the middles with any bits of glitz and buttons we could find.

  3. Students were great at bringing the bottles in to kick start the project and pretty soon a growing army of poppies were being created.

  4. The poppies just kept on getting better and better.

  5. Knitted poppies, plastic poppies and the community even got involved with making ceramic poppies !!

  6. This will form and key feature of the Remembrance Day service on the 8th November 2015. The Poppy Man in Werrington sculpted out around 4000 plastic poppies made by community groups in and around the local area. Moorside was pleased to be a part of this endeavour.

  7. Representatives from the parish council, community groups and The British Legion gave their seal of approval and the piece was featured in the press and on local radio.

  8. A 'POPPY Man' constructed from 3,000 recycled bottles of pop has launched this year's Remembrance Day appeal. The sculpture – created by hundreds of volunteers brought together by Werrington Community Volunteer Group – has now been put on duty next to Werrington War Memorial. Yesterday, the Poppy Man was the main focus of the launch of the Royal British Legion's annual poppy appeal. The idea was Jean Fryer's after it was announced that Tower of London poppies would not be stopping off in Stoke-on-Trent during a nationwide tour, even though around half of the ceramic poppies used to create the stunning display were made in the city. Mrs Fryer – a Werrington parish councillor and member of Werrington Volunteers – said: "I was so incensed we didn't get the Weeping Window when so many of the poppies were made here. "I saw a picture of a poppy man sitting on a bench on the internet and I thought it would be nice if we could do something similar. "So many people came to support us. We have had hundreds of people making the poppies. "Most of them are made out of pop bottles, but we have also had some poppies knitted, or made out of fabric and ceramics. "Seeing it all completed makes me feel quite emotional." Sue Brownsword of Alan Dale, Werrington, spearheaded the project and came up with the design. She said: "I had got a picture in my head of how it would look when it was all put together, but I was quite nervous about how it would turn out, especially when I had thousands of poppies in my house. "But seeing it all put together, I can breath a sigh of relief. It is how I imagined it would be.
