Stimulants • Its Use: Increases alertness, attention, and energy. • Treats: ADHD, narcolepsy, occasionally depression • Names: Adderall, Concerta, Dexedrine • Slang Terms: Addy, Bennies, Speed, Uppers
Opioids • Its use: acts on the nervous system to relieve pain. • Treats: pain from surgeries, body aches, terminal illnesses • Names: Codeine, Acetaminophen, Morphine, Fentanyl • Slang: Hillbilly Heroin, Oxy, OC, Happy Pills
Depressants • Its Use: slows down the normal activity that goes on in the brain and spinal cord • Treats: anxiety and sleep disorders • Names: Xanax, Valium, Amytal • Slang: Candy, Sleeping Pills, Tranks, Yellows, Reds
How can prescription drugs BECOME harmful? • Misuse • When a person consumes the medication in a manner not intended. • Abuse • Problematic use. Taking medication to get high.
Prescription drug abuse in teens • 2nd most abuse drug among teens and young adults. • In 2016, there was 3574 discipline actions related to possession of controlled substances. • Students reported the most commonly used prescription medication is codeine cough syrup, for recreational purposes.
