  1. Pastor – Elder Training By Rev. Dar Karsten

  2. To develop a team mind set between pastor and elder. To Win the Lost And Strengthen the Faithful You can take this material and make it your own. You can change, add, subtract, fix, or correct it. I wanted you to have a tool to train elders. To be on the same page biblically as Pastor and Elder. To develop trust and respect between elder and pastor. To develop in our elders a respect and honor for servanthood. To provide this power point presentation through CDs, at cost, for pastors’ use. To build a greater understanding and honor of eldering in the congregation.

  3. Pastor - Elder Training Resource material for use in: A Workshop Setting Or Congregational Board Meetings Prepared and written by: Rev. Darwin L. Karsten, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Eureka, Missouri (Revised August, 2000)

  4. Pastor – Elder Training Rev. Karsten’s work is in white, and Rev. Domke’s work will be in gold, except the titles, which appear in Gold as part of the color scheme.Rev. Daniel M. Domke expanded and added some material. He also added clip art and illustrations throughout the study.

  5. Preface “Love is a word that is often used superficially in the world around us. For the child of God it is a word that recalls all the great work of Christ in dying and rising again for us. “This is how God showed His love among us; He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him” (1 John 4:9). It is a word that also focuses our attitude toward others.

  6. Preface “We love because He first loved us. If anyone says, I love God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother” ( 1 John 4:19-21).

  7. Preface The ministry of pastors and lay elders finds its heart and power in such love. If God’s love moved Him to the extreme sacrifice of His Son, our love as spiritual leaders should also be expressed in loving and giving concern for people.

  8. Preface These materials are designed to help you consider the wide range of possibilities for pastors and elders to express that loving concern. Some of the ideas will be more helpful than others because of local congregations’ settings and circumstances.

  9. Preface Some of these materials were gathered from helpful resources and reprinted with permission. Others were written and used in our ministry at St. Mark’s. They also provide ample opportunity for the directed study of God’s Word, especially as it speaks to this special area of ministry.

  10. Preface It has been my experience that congregational constitutions highly elevate the position of lay elder, but in many instances pastors and congregations do very little to support and equip those who fill that position for their ministry. It is my prayer that these materials and resources will help to change that situation.

  11. Preface Special thanks to the elders of St. Mark’s for their input and assistance; to my wife and family for their patience and encouragement; and to various friends and fellow pastors for their helpful contribution. I thank God for His gifts to me in these people.

  12. Preface Jesus challenges Peter and us to live His love. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “You know I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon, son of John, do you truly love me?”

  13. Preface Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep” (John 21:15-17). God bless our “loving” for Him. Pastor Darwin L. Karsten

  14. Preface II Twenty-Five years ago, I attended Pastor Karsten’s ‘Pastor – Elder Workshop’, in Missouri. I remember thinking at the time that the material was very practical and, more importantly, biblical and confessional.

  15. Preface II I have used his material ever since to train elders in my congregations with great success. My elders have gained insight in what our Lord wants of His elders who serve with the called pastors to “Win the lost and to strengthen the faithful.”

  16. Preface II Recently, requests have come to both our District Office (MNN) and to Lutheran Island Camp to provide more Pastor - Elder Training. These requests provided the incentive to begin this work.

  17. Preface II I discussed the idea with Rev. Don Fondow, our District President, and with his blessing and encouragement I approached Pastor Karsten for his permission to place his study in a power point presentation to which he graciously has given his permission.

  18. Preface II I have had the joy of having Pastor Karsten in the Minnesota North District three times and count him as my mentor for elder training and my friend. Now I have the honor and privilege to put his study into a multimedia presentation and to expand it in some areas.

  19. The Goal and Reasoning To develop Boards of Elders equipped for ministry To develop Boards of Elders who support their pastors and share the same Confession of Faith

  20. To develop trust and accountability. This will result in the Board of Elders’ willingness to be taught and follow the biblical and confessional leadership of their pastor in difficult decisions.

  21. Team work results as the Board of Elders understands and respects the Office of Pastor and the pastors understanding results in respecting the Office of Elder.

  22. Preface II It is our hope to see this material used by pastors in this media format to further equip their elders for the work of the kingdom. --Pastor Dan M. Domke November 20, 2003
