  2. “Why didn’t I get into college last year?” • Unrealistic expectations / targets / points / results possible • Unaware (intentional or unintentional?) of what is expected in order to complete a Leaving Cert • Negative company – “sucked in syndrome” • Underachieving due to ….. • Matriculation – essential requirements • No back up plan due to ……

  3. CAO mistakes • Courses not in order of preference • Deadlines missed • Requirements • No level 6 or 7’s placed • Misread titles or course information Opt out? Easier option or prolonging the inevitable!

  4. What is expected of me this year? • Profiling – careers portal, reflection, talking with numerous people (family, friends, past pupils, college lecturers etc) • A huge amount of research both in and out of school • Attendance at open days, conferences, talks etc • Questionning ???????? • Appointments with me • Looking at all the alternatives • Back up plans A,B,C,D,E, F……. • Attendance, Homework, Organisation, Revision

  5. I will not.. • Tell you what course to do…only advise • Chase after you all year….your responsibility • Make anyone go to college… We will only have @6 classes of guidance before you make your CAO applications

No one knows…. • How You’re going to feel in 8 or 9 months time • How much potential you have….except you! • How much you want a different future • How passionate you are about your future choices • How confused you are! • How frightened you might be thinking of the future ALL OF THE ABOVE IS NORMAL AND WE’RE HERE TO HELP…you need to be honest with yourself and with me!

  7. What do you want? • Open days, conferences etc • Talks, speakers in.. • A number of appointments • Phonecalls made, questions answered • Advise for parents • Information on grants, accommodation, finances, college life, alternative routes etc.. • Study plans and techniques • Applications to colleges (CAO, UCAS, PLC’s apprenticeships etc…) • Time-out…

  8. Contract • Only 1 class every 2 weeks so… • Be on time • Listen • Have questions recorded • Follow up with me • Research - research – research • Be mature, pro-active, positive and supportive

Time Scale • Higher Options Conference – Wednesday 16th September, RDS, Dublin • CAO applications open on November 5th • CAO closing date for reduced online rate is January 20th, 5:15pm • CAO official closing date is February 1st, 5:15pm • UCAS deadlines for medical related courses December 15th and other courses, January 15th. • Mocks – Early Feb. • Porfolios may be needed for entry to some colleges – late February – April • PLC applications - January and February
