"Are We There Yet???" is a thought-provoking symposium addressing the dichotomy in housing choices - ordinary life options vs. segregated, specialized ones. It highlights the importance of Universal Housing Design, allowing people to live freely and inviting others into their homes. This discussion focuses on negotiating complex service systems, overcoming restrictive policies, and embracing multiple life options. By fostering an environment where experimentation is possible, communities can adapt to changing needs and preferences, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to find their right path.

ARE WE THERE YET??? A Supposium
Keep your eyes open for landmarks
DIVIDED ROAD: Which side of the road are you on? • Ordinary life options • OR - Segregated, congregated special options
DIVIDED ROAD • Which side is our community on? • Which side is government policy on?
GIVE WAY to Universal Housing Design so that people can live anywhere they want to and have anyone over to visit.
ONE WAY • There should be no “one Way” of doing things • But a myriad of real life options to choose from
ROUNDABOUT • Beware of swings and roundabouts and thing going backwards. • Help people to negotiate the roundabout options.
NO ENTRY • Housing and support systems that are tied together and hard to leave. • Hard to negotiate service systems
STOP Restrictive policies and practices that prevent people from having lives
NO U-TURN • Avoid options where there is no going back. • Everyone works out what’s right for them by experimenting with their options. You have to be able to go back and try something different.
NO U-TURN • And as life goes on our needs change, our preferences change – • sometimes things don’t work out the way we hoped they would…..
