  2. Icebreaker Jigsaw Activity • Everyone select one puzzle piece from the bag but do not look at it. • Take 5 minutes to find your match. • Discuss with your partner the word and definition. • Reflect on your findings. • Answer: Was this hard or easy?

  3. Proposal This year the Instructional Leadership Team has decided to focus on vocabulary development for student growth and success. There is a direct relationship between vocabulary growth and academic achievement. In order to build enthusiasm for this school-wide endeavor, A Night With Words has been offered as the vehicle for inspiring students, parents, and staff.

  4. Demographics Student Population

  5. Early Childhood • Literacy Activates that include how people live (Il Standard 16.Akc) • Students in Pre-School learned this year about China. • Mask making promoted comprehension.

  6. Primary • In 1st grade, they are studying clothes. This class used fabric paper and made representations of different clothing types. The activity supports the Common Core Standards of interpreting words.

  7. Middle Grades • Games Promote Word Consciousness Second Language Acquisition Grants Useful Application of Academic Vocabulary • Games: Card Games, Bingo, Pictionary,Scrabble, Probe, & Jeopardy (Blachowicz & Fisher, 2010)

  8. Jr. High • Storytelling, Word Plays, Drama • Builds vocabulary • Stimulates Challenging Ideas • Fosters Diversity • Promotes Reflective Thinking • Encourages Collaboration • Aligns with the Common Core Standards for College and Career Readiness

  9. The Event Save the Date • When: March 6, 2014 • Where: Main Building • Time: 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm • Group Activities with movement every half hour. • Goody Bags (7:00 pm) • Raffle (7:20 pm)

Parking Lot for Committees • Planning: Secure funding, Create Flyers, Collect Responses, Establish Schedule, & Select Appropriate Classrooms. • Volunteers: Attend Event (Set-up, Facilitators of Activities, Relief Support, Greeters, Security and Clean-up). • Financial Supports: Monetary, supplies, Activity Materials, & Prizes.

  12. ConclusionsRecipe for Achievement • Take Culturally responsive Teaching: add respect, diversity & equality • Mix with Interactive, relevant, interesting activities • Place in a caring collaborative environment • Let reflection thrive • Achievement Abounds (Chartock, 2010).
