  1. Feminism/Gender Approach to Criticism By: Becca & Anshika

  2. The Feministic Approach • Concerned with the impact of the gender on writing and reading • Does not simply look at the literature from female writers or female characters • Used to understand literature attempts to uncover what a particular text has to say about gender and gender differences

  3. History of the Feministic Approach • Feminist criticism became a dominant force in Western literary studies in the late 1970s • In the early 1980s, feminist literary criticism developed in a number of ways and is now characterized by a global perspective

  4. May also fit in… • Historical- if the author’s attitude is being examined in relation to his times • Mimetic- when asking how well characters accord with the real world

  5. Advantages of a Feministic Approach • Redresses the problem of generally underrepresented women in the traditional writing • Entails the study of a literary tradition of women writers • Includes useful and often insightful ways of looking at history, culture, and society

  6. Disadvantages of a Feministic Approach • Often misunderstood as anti-patriarchal or ‘male bashing’ • Often viewed as too theoretical • Often used to neglect other perspectives and approaches • May appear shallow, paranoid, conspiratorial, and demagogic

  7. Applying the Feminist Approach In the Year to Come, In the Days to Come By: Dahlia Ravikovitch Written by a female, this poem shows obvious feminism in context to the mother approaching death. There are many examples supporting this criticism including: • “Eight years and not one moment has made her any wiser, raised her up on her feet or restored her will power” • This shows the strength of women, especially women of history and of another ethnicity.
