  6. Respond to task throughout • In each paragraph you must say why the speech is inspirational. • “However, what makes this speech so inspiring is that King goes on to illustrate how these seemingly inescapable problems ‘can and will be changed’.” • “King also sought to inspire his audience by alluding to several key texts in American history.”

  7. “I thought that to simultaneously highlight how a society was discriminating against many of its members whilst also appealing to its core values and potential was inspiring because King takes would could have been a divisive issue and uses it in a unifying way.” • “This is particularly inspiring because he is highlighting how America can improve as a nation.” • “It is inspirational for me to hear how in his speech he can trace the journeys from the horrors of segregation and racial injustice to the possibility of equality and freedom.”

  8. Conclusion • Respond to task • Strongly state what King’s key message is and why it is inspirational.

  9. King’s speech is inspirational because of his message and his use of rhetorical techniques. The demand for racial equality appeals to every person who would not wish to be discriminated against, while King’s delivery helps to take the audience on a journey from the ‘dark and desolate valley’ to the ‘joyous daybreak’ of freedom.

  10. Why Techniques Are Used • Imagery- helps to vividly illustrate concepts- freedom, oppression, liberty, justice. • Anaphora- stresses key ideas. This would be particularly helpful for an audience listening to the speech. • Antithesis- helps to portray the journey from racial injustice to equality, the nightmare to the dream.

  11. Analysis of Imagery • Deconstruct the image • What two things are being compared? • What is the effect of this comparison?

  12. “One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.” • In this metaphor King compares the shackles used for fastening slaves’ hands and feet to the racist oppression still suffered by African Americans in 1963. This is a powerful comparison because it underlines that, while slavery ended with the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans do enjoy their promised liberty; their physical chains have been replaced with other forms of oppression and repression.

  13. Apostrophes • Use to indicate possession • If a word ends with an s, then the apostrophe comes after it • Do not use an apostrophe for a possessive its • King’s dream • African Americans’ living conditions • Its appeal.
