Open Source Operating System • Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 “Sarge” • CD Images available to download and burn to CD, then installed on workstation • Stable packages released only after significant testing • Ability to work as LAN with addition of SAMBA server software • Support available through discussion forums and installation manuals, or pay service if necessary • Precompiled and packaged with lots of software

Applications Included with Debian Office Software • Open Office • Suite includes word processing, presentation, database, HTML editor, and spreadsheet programs • Ability to save in different formats • Support section through web site and tutorials Web Browser • Firefox by Mozilla • Widely used and tested • Built in security features • Tabbed browsing • Supports common plug-ins • Support forums available online

Integrated Library System • Koha, the first, the most widely used • Broad featured, but user friendly, designed for small/medium libraries • Catalog creation with Machine Readable Cataloging tags • Online Public Access Catalog • Circulation Control • Management and Acquisitions functions • Can be established on LAN • Installation and catalog set-up support available in addition to discussion forums

Image Management • Greenstone, searchable image manager for digital images and documents • Constructs • Presents • Maintains • Works on Internet, LAN, or published on to CDs • Meta-data or full-text searches, index browsing, MARC tags • Support through self-study, e-mail lists, discussion forums

So What and What’s Next? • Creating a fully functioning library from open source software is possible. • Debian operating system packages make it easier and include applications for use and ability to add special interest software. • Open source integrated library software and image managers are available and work with the Debian operating system and do as much, if not more, than proprietary software. • Support available at various levels. • Now that the goals are met, what is next for Big Sky Community Library?
