INTRODUCTION • First case of HIV/AIDS was reported in 1986. • HIV prevalence among general population= 3.6%. • About 3.1 million people are living with HIV in Nigeria. • About 300,000 new infections occur annually with people aged 15 – 24 contributing 60% of infections. • 1.5 million People living with HIV require ARVs using the new WHO guidelines.

  3. CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE PRESENTING LATE • 57% present late ( CDC class B and C) • Mean age = 35 ± 8 years • 60% are married • 60% have at least primary education • Tuberculosis is the commonest OI • Most patients already knew their HIV status at late presentation

  4. REASONS FOR LATE PRESENTATION • Fear of Stigma • Financial Constraint • Faith in herb/spiritual healing • Not believing in HIV treatment • Surprisingly, no significant Alcohol or Cigarette use • No one presented late because of distance from health facility

  5. RECOMMENDATIONS • Stigma: Intensify EIC strategies for those that may present late and re-enforce positive living • Train PLWHA in vocational trade & inform that Rx is free • Train religious & traditional bodies/schools to further disseminate appropriate information • Testimonies from relatives, friends, community and support group members • Large studies are required
