  2. Imagine that someone wanted to make a 15 foot statue of you? What would the artist need to know about you?

  3. Let’s say that you are 5 feet tall in real life. • The statue will be 15 feet tall. • What is the ratio of your height to the statue’s height? Statue’s Height 15 ft Your Height 5 ft The ratio is 3:1.

  4. If the scale is 3:1 then • How long will the statue’s arm be? • Measure the length of your arm and make it 3 times longer. • What about the length of the statues index finger?

  5. Measure the length of your foot. • What would its length be on a statue of you that had a scale of 4? • How did you figure it out? • Measure real foot. • Multiply that length by 4.

  6. What if you went to see a statue and wanted to see what it would look like in life-sized proportions?

  7. What would the statue of liberty look like if she were life-sized?

  8. Task: You will determine the dimensions of the Statue of Liberty if she were a real life woman using the concept of scale. You will draw to scale what the Statue of Liberty will look like if she were life-sized using the concept of scale and graph paper.

  9. First we need a few assumptions: Statue of Liberty Dimensions All measurements are made to the nearest foot. Real life Dimensions: The average American Woman is 5’5” tall. Drawing: 1” drawing will equal 1’ in real life.

You will design and plan a deck off the back of your house • You will provide • Hand drawn sketch to scale with front, right, and top perspective • Draw a plan for the support structure • Detail for stairs • Create a bill of materials in Excel • Cost out the entire material cost of the deck assuming you will purchase everything at Home Depot or Lowes and put in a spreadsheet • Create a project plan in another tab of the spreadsheet and estimate days to complete and number of hours to complete Design and Plan a Deck (Major Grade)

Deck specifications • Surface is at least 8 ft by 10 ft • Near house, 3 feet off the ground • Away from house, 6 feet off the ground • Has a 3 foot railing and 3 feet of stairs from backyard • Materials: • Surface 2 x 6 treated lumber • Support and “skirt” 2x8 treated lumber • Support surface (beams below surface) on 16” centers • Support to ground 4 x 4 treated lumber spaced 48”, use a cross joist 2 x 8 • Each support cemented into ground with a 1’ diameter hole 3’ deep • Deck attached to house with large screws into side of house • Railing attached to skirt with 2 4” screws • Railing is 2 x 4. Railing support is 2 x 2 • Deck nailed down • Deck is stained on all visible surfaces
