Aims of Family Learning • Family Learning programmes (wider Family Learning) are designed to enable adults and children learn together, develop skills and knowledge, and to help parents or carers to be more active in support of their children’s learning and development. • Family Literacy, Language & Numeracy programmes aim to improve the literacy, language and numeracy of both children and adults and to improve parents’ ability to help their children.

Wider Family Learning • Promotes Family Learning Week to engage new families in learning • Develops skills and knowledge of children and adults • Works in partnership to develop programmes or courses for families • Prioritises LSC target groups • Delivers courses in ICT, Healthy Eating, Arts & Crafts, Baby Sign Language and Play and Language for families with pre-school children • Plans to develop provision in Languages, Sport, Science & Technology (to engage dads)

Family Literacy, Language & Numeracy • Improves the basic skills of children and parents • Targets parents with few or no qualifications • Delivers programmes in partnership with schools • Engages ESOL families • Delivers “Early Start” programmes for families with pre-school children • Encourages parents to gain qualifications • Provides both joint programmes e.g. Early Start or programmes for parents with activities for them to share with their children • Operates with a team of trained FLLN tutors

Issues • Maintaining & increasing provision during realignment • Identifying the best times for families to attend • Finding & using suitable accommodation • Developing expertise within a sessional workforce • Prioritising provision to disadvantaged families and communities • Engaging men in Family Learning
