  2. Queen Victoria • The Queen is born on May 24,1819. • To Prince Edward Duke of Kent and German princess Victoria Mary Louisa of Saxe-Coburg • Born in Kensington Palace • The Queen is christened Princess Alexandrina Victoria. • Ascended the throne on June 20, 1837 at the age of 18. NBN

The Beginning of an Era • The Queen marries her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha on February 10, 1840. • They had nine children, and most married into German Royalty. • Prince Albert dies on December 14,1861; the queen will forever mourn his death. • The Queen withdraws herself from public life. • The Royal family had become the model for the whole country. The Fashion • Weddings • Queen Victoria was the first to establish the trend of wearing a white wedding gown. • The use of a black top hat was a necessity for a gentleman. • At this time men and women were becoming more interested in sports. • Special Wardrobes were designed for bicycling, tennis, water sports, horse back riding.   5. The Architecture • The Victorian Architecture lasted from 1825- 1900 • It was made up of four different styles • Italianate • Second Empire • Stick-Eastlake • Queen Anne • Osborne House • Prince Albert designed it to accommodate the whole family. NBN

  6. The Arts • The Great Exhibition • It was opened on May 1, 1851 • The crystal Palace was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton in 10 days, and was constructed in 9 months. • There were over 13,000 exhibitions. • It was constructed on Hyde Park in London NBN

Interior Decorating • The changes in decorating changed many times during this era. • High Victorian Style • Rooms were crammed with furniture, art, fabric, and rugs. • People thought that bare looking rooms were not fashionable. • Aesthetic Movement • Elizabethan, Classical Greek and traditional Georgian styles inspired how furniture was made. • Rooms were more subtle • Art Nouveau • Japonisme • Arts and Crafts • Celtic Revival • Liberty Style • Art Deco • Wallpaper • During the mid-Victorian era floral patterns were popular. The End of the Victorian Era • Queen Victoria dies on January 22, 1901 at the age of 81. • The Queen reigned for 63 years, seven months, and two days. • The Queen was the last Royal from the House of Hanover. • The Queen eldest son Prince Albert Edward VII then becomes king. • He belonged to the House of Wettin NBN
