Here are Plastic is widely used for food packaging for the various benefits that it offers. Here are the different types of plastics used for food packaging that you must know about. the different types of plastics used for food packaging that you must know about. Plastic has become an indispensable item in our everyday lives. It is one of the cheapest and most convenient choices in most cases. It is used extensively in food packaging by food packaging companies throughout the world. Let us have a look at the 6 major types of plastics used for food packaging by them:- 1. High 1. High- -Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Density Polyethylene (HDPE) – HDPE, as the name suggests, has a higher density than LDPE. It can be used for storing a specific type of food item since it is harder and can withstand a higher temperature range. It is much easier to recycle as compared to other plastics. Owing to its versatility, it can be used as a wrap as well as a carton for milk. 2. Low 2. Low- -Density Polyethylene (LDPE) Density Polyethylene (LDPE) - The density of LDPE is a bit lower than that of HDPE. It can be used to pack food products that are acidic or basic in nature, as well as an alcoholic product since it does not react with them in any way. However, it should be the last preference to pack food items containing mineral oils. 3. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) 3. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) - PET is the most commonly used for food packaging. It is the most easily recyclable plastic. It is most commonly used in the production of plastic bottles for soft drinks. Bottles made of PET as well as PVC are used to store beer. It can be processed and used in the packaging of frozen goods as well. 4. Polypropylene (PP) 4. Polypropylene (PP) - PP, having a high resistance to heat, chemicals and fat, can be used to pack a wide range of food products. It is also more economical than the rest of the plastics, making it a more acceptable choice, especially for plastic carton suppliers. 5. Polystyrene (PS) 5. Polystyrene (PS) - PS form of plastic is used comparatively lesser for food packaging when compared to the other forms. It is non-biodegradable in nature and cannot be recycled, which makes it a major cause of pollution. Various measures are being taken to reduce the use of PS in takeout food packaging due to its impact on environmental pollution. 6. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) 6. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) - Although most commonly used for making pipes, PVC has replaced glass bottles in most cases since it doesn’t break as easily as glass does and also weighs much less. It imparts absolutely no taste to the food items packed in it. It can be molded into a variety of shapes and designs, which makes it convenient to pack a wider array of food items. Hence, it can be concluded that plastic has replaced the glass as well as other materials that were previously used for food packaging to a large extent. However, owing to the difficulty in recycling or reusing it, plastic production must be kept as minimal as possible. Various environmental organizations in India are trying to get the packaging companies in India to reduce the usage of plastic. But seeing the extent of its usage, it seems like an extremely hard task to be accomplished.
