  1. The More the Merrier? Exploring population density

  2. Introduction • Human population growth has a variety of consequences, both direct and indirect. Today, we will look at one of those consequences: crowding. • With population growth, the average population density will increase, even if the population is less dense in some places than in others.

  3. Introduction, Cont. Visualizing increased population density in a variety of environments can help us plan for the future. For example, in a place already densely populated, an increase can result in: • More crowding • Traffic • Waiting in lines • Waiting lists • Tighter clusters of houses • Compact apartments with less space • General sense of stress

  4. Introduction, Cont. In a mostly unpopulated place, a slight increase in population density can: • Interrupt a previously uninterrupted horizon • Reduce or fragment open space • Require new electrical wires and other services.

  5. Activity • As we continue, think about the pros and cons of higher population densities. • Think about these questions: • What services are enhanced by a higher population density? • What are the challenges of crowding?

  6. Imagine… …that the number of students in our classroom was doubled. On your white board, brainstorm the impacts of this change with your group.

  7. Secret Vote • Put your heads down and cover your eyes. Would you like to have… • The same • Fewer • More Students in this class than we do now?

  8. CPR Set-up • Two volunteers in the square • Crowding simulation

  9. Debrief Original two: How did the environment and your behavior change as more people were added? Others: Did the students jump in sync? • Why did this happen? • How did this happen? • Can you think of things people do differently when they are among lots of other people?

  10. Discussion • If you were raising money for a school project by selling candy bars to your neighbors, would you prefer high population density or low population density? • What other services are easier to provide for an area of high population density?

  11. Discussion • What qualities are desirable about areas of low population density? • If you had a cold, would more people be likely to catch it where population density was high or low? • If population continues to grow locally, what is the impact on population density?

  12. Compare Brainstorm activities for which it is better to have a lot of people around and those for which solitude is better. A lot of peopleSolitude
