  2. Who we are: Internet2 • 187 U.S. universities, 70 corporations, 40 other research organizations and 30+ international partners • Enable advanced networking applications development and use • Provide advanced networking environment • Transfer technology and experiences • Abilene – one of two Internet2 backbones (along with vBNS) • Internet2 is STAR TAP partner/participant

  3. International Transit Network • Joint initiative of STAR TAP, CANARIE, Internet2 • Jointly provide transit across North America for R&E networks • Extends ‘transit’ already provided via STAR TAP ATM switch

  4. Abilene version of ITN • Forward/Announce routes of all non-US peers + vBNS • All non-US peers of Abilene + vBNS are eligible for participation • All current non-US peers of Abilene + vBNS are currently participating

  5. 1 May 2001 OC12 OC3-12 Abilene International Peering STTL CA*net3, (AARnet) APAN/TransPAC, Ca*net3, CERnet, GEMNET, IUCC, KOREN/KREONET2, NORDUnet, RENATER, REUNA, SURFnet, SingAREN, SINET, TAnet2, (ANSP, RNP2) NYCM BELNET, CA*net3, JANET, NORDUnet, SURFnet, TEN-155*, (HEAnet) SNVA GEMNET, (SINET) LOSA SingAREN, SINET, UNINET AmPATH (REUNA, RNP2, RETINA) CALREN2 CUDI UT El Paso (CUDI) * ARNES, BELNET, CARNET, CESnet, DFN, GRNET, HEAnet, RESTENA, SWITCH, HUNGARNET, GARR-B, POL-34, RCCN, RedIRIS

Newly reachable at STAR TAP via ITN(although not physically in Chicago) • BELNET (Belgium) • CUDI (Mexico) • JANET (U.K.) • TEN-155 (DANTE) • (ARNES, CARNET, CESnet, DFN, GRNET, HEAnet, RedIRIS, RESTENA, SWITCH, HUNGARNET, GARR-B, POL-34, RCCN) • Coming Soon • AARNET (Australia) • REUNA (Chile, via AmPATH)

  7. Reaching Abilene in Chicago • STAR TAP: the AADS switch • Layer 2 peering via PVC • 710 North Lake Shore Drive • Understand gigE connection to be made from 710 North Lake Shore Drive to nearest Abilene core node • Also OC12 from 710 NLSD to STAR TAP ATM switch • Abilene core node: NBC Building • 455 City Front Drive, Chicago

  8. Abilene Chicago presence • We have assessed the Qwest Chicago options • 20 N. Wacker Drive • close to Teleglobe • Abilene STAR TAP circuit (OC-12c) • 350 East Cermak Drive (Lakeside Technology Center) • recently opened • Qwest Cybercenter • 455 City Front Plaza Drive (NBC Building) • ESnet • NASA Prototyping Network (NPN) [pre • CERN • DTF/IL central node • Abilene MREN circuit (currently OC-3c) • I-WIRE node

  9. Abilene Chicago presence - II • Will establish Abilene presence • Qwest PoP in NBC Bldg (455 City Front Drive Plaza) • Cisco 12008 router currently in Sacramento • Backbone attachments • Two options • OC-48c/SONET protected: Indianapolis • OC-48c/DWDM unprotected: Indy and Cleveland • This would represent first use of optical transport in Abilene • Peering attachments • STAR TAP/NGIX-Chicago – OC-12c ATM • Star Light – Gigabit Ethernet switch • Fiber pair or  to 710 NLSD (I-WIRE) • Planned Star Light optical attachment • Second fiber pair or  to 710 NLSD (I-WIRE)

  10. Abilene Chicago presence - III • Connector attachments • MREN – OC-12c ATM upgrade • Distributed Terascale Facility • Availability target date (provisional) • September 15, 2001 • No plans to terminate AADS OC-12c peering connection yet, but we are very interested in helping with the technical planning for int’l & domestic peering transition

  11. Current context for the next national backbone • 5-year Abilene commitment ends in April, 2003 • Announcement targeted for Fall Meeting – Austin – 10/01 • Computational science as an emerging interdisciplinary field • Recognition of bandwidth as the fourth critical parameter • In addition to CPU, memory, storage • NSF Distributed Terascale Facility solicitation • Availability of optical transport technologies - DWDM • A lot of new transcontinental fiber in the ground; a lot of business plans on fire… • A contrarian opportunity for Higher Education

  12. More Info • www.internet2.edu • All aspects of Internet2 • www.internet2.edu/international • International partnerships • Abilene and vBNS peering information
