SLWC Sonde History • CRREL and NCAR had contracts with ATEK (Geoff Hill) to develop a sonde-based LWC measurement device • ATEK sondes were flown at Cleveland in 1997 and MWISP, April 1999 • Following some low-level development activity, ATEK sondes also flown from Lorain County Airport, April 2001
NASA SLWC Sonde Development-2012 • Anasphere, Inc, of Bozeman, MT developed prototype SLWC sonde under NASA SBIR • SBIR version tested by NCAR/NOAA/Radiometrics team in Feb/Mar 2012 • Further development under NASA AvSP funding to reach “commercial product” status • Sonde redesign, build, and test (tunnel) completed Nov 2012 • 40 sondes delivered to NASA, configured to operate with InterMet iMet-1 sondes
NASA SLWC Sonde Development-2013 • NASA purchased InterMet ground station and received training in Boulder and Cleveland • NASA purchased 100 InterMet sondes and expendables • NASA SBIR Phase I awarded to Anasphere for droplet sizing concept • Phase I report and Phase II proposal due for completion on Nov 23, 2013
