  2. What do we mean by environmental control in the context of assessment Any activity that enables the child to directly control their environment. This direct control results in something significant happening.

  3. Why use Environmental Control? • Motivation • Access to technology • A focus for communication

  4. Why use Environmental Control? • Fun way of exploring access. • Significant effect resulting from physical input. • Demonstrate how a child can be involved in activities, both at home and in school. • A communicative activity. • This is particularly useful for those who are very physically complex, demotivated and /or passive.

  5. Equipment and Activities • Latching boxes • Battery operated toys, mains equipment. • Simple communication devices. • Eg Little Macks, Tech Talk ECU • Communication devices / Computers with environmental control unit. • Infra red toys e.g Cars, Robosapien • Room controls e.g door, curtains, plugs, stereo, TV • Infra red speaker phone • Bluetooth mobile phone

  6. Latching boxes • Looking for optimum switch site or sites. • Emphasis on activity • Examples • Music, bubble machine, disco light, fan, vacuum cleaner, twirl paint. • Video Jamie

Simple communication devices • Single message devices • Little Mack, 4talk4 for battery operated toys (Toy is activated while the recorded message plays) • May use with switch latching box • Tech Talk Plus ECU • On / Off control of four wireless mains sockets • Switch input version appears to control 8 battery operated toys

  9. Communication devices / Computers with environmental control unit. • Infra red toys e.g Cars, Robosapien • Room controls e.g door, curtains, plugs, stereo, TV • Infra red speaker telephone • Bluetooth mobile phone. • Flexible means of assessment
