  1. Activity 6 Breeding Corn for Two Traits

  2. Read the introduction. • A dihybrid cross is a cross where two traits of interest are studied.

  3. Challenge • How do scientists predict the results of crossing corn for two kernel characteristics: color and texture?

  4. As you work through the activity, remember that in sexual reproduction each parent contributes one allele for each trait to the offspring.

  5. Punnett Square: Breeding Corn

  6. Procedure

  7. Analysis 1 • Compare the Punnett squares you constructed in Activity 4, “Breeding Corn,” with the Punnett squares you constructed in this activity. By answering the following questions, show how the possible outcomes of a cross for one trait helps in analyzing two traits. • How did you need to change the Punnett square to consider two traits? • How would you need to change the Punnett square if you were to consider three traits?

  8. Revisit the Challenge • How do scientists predict the results of crossing corn for two kernel characteristics: color and texture?

  9. Key Vocabulary • allele • dihybrid cross • gamete • genotype • phenotype • Punnett square • selective breeding • trait
