Major Issues in Adolescent Health • Adolescents comprise 30% of the population worldwide • 75% of diseases in adults are caused by the conditions of life and lifestyle during childhood and youth • Adolescents account for 1/3 of new cases of STIs • More than half of all new HIV infections are among 15-24 year-olds • Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among young people • Suicides rate in young people is increasing

Health of adolescents in Ukraine • General level of morbidity among 15-17 year-olds inUkraine - 7746 per 10,000 • Major cases of morbidity - respiratory diseases, nervous disorders, traumas and poisonings • Main contributors to adolescent mortality - unintentional injuries • Maximum number of suicides among teenagers is registered at 15-16 years

  4. Health of adolescents in Ukraine • 50-74% of 17-18 year olds smoke • In most cases use of drugs and alcohol is initiated at 14-18 years • Level of STIs among adolescents is increasing • Number of HIV+ children and young people increased 6 times since 1995

  5. Adolescents-at-Risk Study Tour • August,2000 in Washington, DC and Philadelphia, PA • Countries represented: Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Albania • Participants: • family physicians • nurses • OB/GYNs • psychologists • policy-makers

Objectives • Familiarize the participants with programs and services for adolescents • Identify models and approaches that could be adapted to NIS conditions • Identify future directions of program implementation • Develop the agenda for adolescent health workshop

  10. Adolescents-at Risk Workshop • November 29- December 1, 2000 in Kiev, Ukraine • 85 participants from Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Belarus

Adolescents-at Risk WorkshopObjectives • To introduce models of health services delivery for adolescents in the US and NIS • To discuss specific needs of these services and requirements to adolescent health care providers • To develop action plans for PHC partnerships/WWCs • To work with mass media on increasing of public awareness about adolescent problems

Future Activities • Develop the section on adolescents for the WWC Clinical Practice Guidelines • Include the section of adolescent health care in the reference manual for primary health care physicians • Develop the system of interaction with social services for youth • PHC centers and WWCs will design the strategies of health promotion with the emphasis on adolescents
