  2. OPENING REMARKS • This will be my most difficult Forum to date • Planned on unveiling our new Lakefront plan tonight • But…at 10:00 this morning, I elected to take a step back and be sure we got it right before doing so

  3. OPENING REMARKS • This was a difficult decision – but I believe it is in everyone’s best interest • Why? • We’re simply not ready • Set the date for today’s forum two months ago

  4. OPENING REMARKS • I identified 3 key caveats to guide our planning process • Must be realistic and fundable • Take as much time as needed to get it right • When I unveil – I need to be sold

  5. OPENING REMARKS • Bottom-line is that I’m not comfortable that we’ve met these expectations and I would rather tell you so tonight, then to roll out something that we’ll regret tomorrow

  7. WHERE WE STAND TODAY • $8M in funding available • $1,000,000 Federal grant #1 • $350,000 BP donation • $2,563,000 RDA grant • $2,000,000 BP donation* • $2,000,000 Federal grant #2* • $18M addional revenue anticipated

  8. WHERE WE STAND TODAY • Completed Public Input Process • Design Charrette • Pierogi Fest kiosk • Phase 1 in progress • $2M project to bring in utilities • Funded by Feds, BP & RDA

  9. WHERE WE STAND TODAY • Phase 1 in progress (cont.) • Construction expected to start 2Q 2009 and be completed in 4Q • This will also complete the Hammond water project (saving over $1M)

  10. WHERE WE STAND TODAY • Bike-Pedestrian Trail Project • $1.8M project funded by RDA • Expected to start 1Q 2009 and finish in 4Q • Connect George Lake Trail to Whiting Park

  11. WHERE WE STAND TODAY • Bike-Pedestrian Trail Project (cont) • Will include some temporary routes until land is acquired or available

  12. WHERE WE STAND TODAY • Draft plan developed • Incorporates Design Charrette ideas and concepts • Removal of Rip-Rap • Boardwalk • Multi-use facility

  13. WHERE WE STAND TODAY • Draft plan developed • Closing 117th St. entrance (why?) • Improvements to County launch • Pedestrian bridges • Lake fill near Gun Club • Numerous other amenities

  17. OUR NEXT STEPS • Finalize the Plan • Get a better understanding of the projected costs • Develop a Phasing Plan • Allow for add’l features to be added as funds become available • Refine the Financial Plan

  18. OUR NEXT STEPS • Begin Phase 1 infrastructure construction • Begin Bike Trail construction • Unveil Final Plan in 1Q 2009 • Begin construction of Phase 2 in late 2009

  19. CLOSING • The design Charrette and planning process helped us develop the vision for our Lakefront development • We just need to take the time necessary to make sure we get it right
